Records Are Broken, History Is Made, and Random Facts
History was made in Super Bowl LIII as there were a few records set and/or broken. Super Bowl LIII broke the record for the lowest scoring game through three quarters and lowest scoring super bowl ever. This shows how talented the defenses areas were. Secondly, The Patriots now tie the Steelers for most super bowl victories by a franchise. The way the game was flowing we could have seen another record being broke where a punter could have won MVP. Both Punters averaged between forty-three to forty-six yards. Lastly, wide receiver Julian Edelman won Super Bowl MVP.
A Battle of the Defenses
To most viewers, this game was considered boring and not full of excitement. It was boring because both offenses were being shut down for the most part. There were a few sparks from the offenses of big gains on a few plays. Points didn’t show up until the end of the second quarter. The Patriots held the Rams to sixty-two yards rushing and two hundred and twenty-nine yards passing/receiving the entire game according to nfl.com. Rams quarterback Jared Goff completed nineteen passes out of an attempted thirty-eight with one interception. When the Rams had a chance to tie; the Patriots defense stepped up and intercepted Goff.
On the other side of the ball, the Rams held the Patriots to one hundred and fifty-four yards rushing and two hundred and sixty-two yards passing/receiving. Brady completed twenty-one of thirty-five attempted passes. Los Angles held him to zero touchdowns. The only touchdown scored was by rookie running back Sony Michel. In the end, defenses do win championships and the Patriots defense did answer the call when needed. This game proved to viewers why these are two of the five top defenses in the NFL because of the result of the game.
Invisible Offenses
Both offenses didn’t make their presence felt until the second quarter of Super Bowl LIII. Even when they made their presence felt they didn’t seem like they were achieving much. This justifies how hard both teams defense worked. They were both physical and quick to the ball. It seemed as if both teams were scared to take risks. For Los Angeles, they didn’t really give the ball to Todd Gurley. When they did he broke off for long runs. Then for the New England Patriots, they couldn’t run the ball well to start or pass. Then Brady started to find Edelman and they seemed to be playing backyard football with the Rams. Furthermore, the only touchdown came from Sony Michel.
Closing Remarks
In what was an ugly game the Patriots defense stepped up in clutch moments. The offense scored the points, while the defense prevented the Rams from scoring and coming back. in what was a team win the defense is the X-factor to the game that won it for them. For example, Jason McCourty prevented a touchdown that would have tied the game. Brandin Cooks was wide open the McCourty came out of nowhere to knock the ball from Cooks to save what should have been a Rams touchdown. Hence, why the defense won the game for the Patriots. The result of Super Bowl LIII may have been the same or different, with more points had McCourty not broken up that pass.
