College football arguably has more tradition and excitement surrounding their teams than professional football. Part of the lore surrounding these programs is their unique uniforms. Let’s take a look at the best of the best.
The Best Uniforms in College Football
Michigan Wolverines
The winged helmets really take the cake here. Combine them with blue jerseys with maize pants, with blue pants or white jerseys with white pants, blue pants, or white pants and you have numerous awesome color combinations. If you’ve ever had the privilege of watching the team come out of the tunnel in those awesome uniforms while the players touch the MGo Blue Supports You banner while the band plays “Hail to the Victors” then you understand the lore of Michigan football.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish
Unlike the Michigan uniforms which could be described as “busy”, the uniforms worn by the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame fall under the category of less is better. First, the classic gold helmets are second to none. The classic blue jerseys are gold pants that match the helmets are simply the embodiment of class. The white road jerseys do nothing to distract from the classic look of the Irish.
Yet lest we not forget about the special occasions where the Fighting Irish break out the green home jerseys for really big games. Surprisingly in recent years, the team hasn’t won a lot in the special green jerseys. A last-second loss to USC with QB Matt Leinhart getting pushed over the goal line by his teammates for the win comes to mind. Anyway you slice it, Notre Dame has some of the coolest uniforms in all of college football.
Tennessee Volunteers
Similar to the University of Michigan but unlike Notre Dame, the Tennessee Volunteers football team has multiple color combinations for their uniforms and all of them are cool. They have orange jerseys with white pants, orange on orange, white jerseys and orange pants, white on white, and recently black on black with black helmets.
Fans of Rocky Top surely enjoy all of these combinations even though they don’t get to see the white jerseys at home. No other team in college football has the exact same version of the iconic Tennessee orange. The iconic white helmet with the orange T is worn with all of the uniform combinations except the black on black which is worn with a black helmet with an orange T.
North Carolina Tarheels
Another southern school with unusual and iconic uniforms. The University of North Carolina Tar heels are famous for their Carolina blue color combinations that are very similar to sky blue.
The Heels are normally seen at home on blue on blue or blue jerseys with white pants. On the road, it’s either white on white or white jerseys with blue pants. Either way, they are always seen wearing those really cool blue and white helmets. The uniforms go nicely with the Carolina fight song as well.
USC Trojans
Almost all of the time you will see the Trojans in gold pants although every once in a while you may see them in red pants. The jerseys are either red or white with gold trim.
The helmets worn by the Trojans are some of the best with the color red being dominant. The Trojans never change the helmets they wear because they are simply one of the best and don’t need to change them up.
