The Dallas Cowboys sit at 3-7 with seven games left. They’ve lost five straight games, Dak Prescott is done for the season, and everything around them is falling apart figuratively and literally. As you may have seen AT&T Stadium saw debris fall from the roof hours before their week 11 game on Monday night. That sums up how the season is going for the Cowboys it has been a disaster.
If the season ended today the Cowboys would be drafting ninth overall in the 2025 draft. It’s safe to say they can put a fork in this season and hope to bounce back in 2025. There’s still a long way to go for Cowboys fans and the offseason couldn’t come any faster.
The Disatrous Season for the Dallas Cowboys
The Injury Bug
A big part of the horrendous season for the Cowboys has come from injury. Brandin Cooks has been out since week four, DaRon Bland will make his season debut on Sunday, DeMarcus Lawrence has been banged up and that’s just a few of the injuries they’ve dealt with. In last Monday’s loss, Jake Ferguson suffered a concussion, Markquese Bell suffered a season-ending injury, and Zack Martin also suffered an injury.
Previewing Sunday’s game there’s a chance they will be without Trevon Diggs, Martin, and Tyler Smith against the Washington Commanders. Diggs and Smith have been listed as questionable but Martin’s status is doubtful. The Cowboys may once again be short-handed as they face a tough Washington team.
No Rush to Hand the Offense to Rush
Prescott’s injury gave a lot of fans what they asked for, giving Cooper Rush the keys to the offense. In 2022, Rush did step in for an injured Prescott and led them to a 4-1 record. However, during that stretch, the defense was outstanding. They were holding opponents to 13 PPG and only averaged 17.8 PPG offensively. This time around he’s 0-2 since becoming the starter and they’ve failed to score more than 10 points in each game and the defense has allowed 34 PPG in each of his starts.
With Prescott on the field, the Cowboys didn’t perform to their expectations but he deserves credit for winning three games with this team. Maybe with the New York Giants and Carolina Panthers coming up they may be able to snag two more wins but nothing is guaranteed.
In Trey We Trust?
With the season being dead in the water and the playoffs being a long shot, it may be time to give Trey Lance a shot. They traded a fourth-round pick for Lance last August but he saw the majority of his playing time in the preseason. He threw for 662 yards, two touchdowns, and five interceptions in the three games.
This offseason they declined his fifth-year option, making him a free agent after the 2024 season. The fourth-round pick the Cowboys traded for hasn’t had any impact and possibly won’t be back next season. There are seven games left in the regular season, so giving Lance an opportunity wouldn’t hurt. Playing him for the remainder of the season could be a much-needed evaluation to determine if they sign him back or not.
If Lance isn’t back with the Cowboys next season the front office will be under even more heat. Especially considering they could’ve used that fourth-round pick on a running back such as Bucky Irving or Braelon Allen.
“………” The Next Head Coach of the Dallas Cowboys
Mike McCarthy’s time in Dallas is most likely done. It’ll be a surprise if Jerry Jones extends McCarthy after the disastrous season they’ve dealt with. The biggest question this offseason will be who’s the next head coach for the Cowboys. Many have entertained the idea of Deion Sanders but they may come at a cost. That cost being drafting Shedeur Sanders which wouldn’t make sense for Dallas to use a first-round pick on him. Sanders (Deion) has also stated he has no plans of leaving Colorado for the NFL.
The Cowboys also need to join the new wave when it comes to hiring coaches. Hiring a younger and innovative guy to lead may be exactly what they need. If they go that route, Ben Johnson from the Detroit Lions or Bobby Slowik from the Houston Texans could step in and help change the culture. They also have their defensive assistant, Al Harris who’s already loved by the players and the organization.
If they decide to go after a guy that’s more proven in the league then it’ll be a no-brainer to bring in Bill Belichick, Mike Vrabel, or even Pete Carroll. The search for a coach shouldn’t start in January when their season comes to an end but starting that search right now may be in their best interest.
