At the beginning of the season, Rafael Devers and the Boston Red Sox discussed the changing positions. Devers refused to move from third base to DH, even with the addition of Alex Bregman, until eventually Devers was forced to. When Triston Casas went down for the season, Devers was then offended by the Red Sox asking him nicely to move to first base. However, it doesn’t seem the same way in San Francisco.
Rafael Devers Comments After Blockbuster Trade
Rafael Devers Willing to Play All Positions for the Giants
Devers didn’t just refuse to play first for the Sox; Devers told the Sox to go to the market and “do their job”. Devers underwent fire for such a comment before things presumably cleared up. However, it didn’t take long for the Red Sox to trade the hard-headed DH for a few players. The trade itself hurt for Boston, not to mention it came at an unexpected time.
However, things have gotten even more sour, as Devers was seen taking reps at first base for the Giants, something he utterly refused to do with the Red Sox.
Devers isn’t all that mad about the trade from the Red Sox. Something he couldn’t do in Boston is being done easily in San Francisco. “I’m here to play wherever they want me to play”, Devers said.
Is This Another Mookie Betts Trade?
The big question remains for Boston: Is this another trade that represents the bambino curse? In my opinion, no, this trade was fair. Kyle Harrison and Jordan Hicks both can be essential in Boston, and neither prospect is just a throw-in, hopefully. The most significant aspect of this trade, however, is the contract. Every penny of Devers’ massive contract, an expensive contract for a DH, is being paid now by San Francisco. This should enable Boston to compete more effectively in free agency, potentially re-signing players like Bregman and pursuing top-tier talent. The one player that Boston hopes to get most from is Harrison. The rotation had ben struggling, and with Harrison, the team might be more balanced than before.
Even without Devers, this team could be a significantly better team in the future, especially if Boston invests in the team financially. Slowly, the Red Sox have accumulated stars, which is far from an overstatement. Regardless of the fact that Devers is a force to be reckoned with, he was expensive, whiny, and is at times overrated.
What Now for the Giants?
For San Francisco, this means competition for it all. This team has had to look up to the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets, and San Diego Padres in the NL for the last few seasons. However, with their own “big three”, the Giants have the ability not just to take a wild card spot, but also the division itself. Devers is expensive, but this team can afford it.
For the Giants, there really shouldn’t be that much trouble when it comes competing now. The lineup definitely needs to improve as players have underperformed. However, this team is slowly becoming a juggernaut. Hopefully for San Francisco, this will bring them a step closer to World Series contention.
After some beef with the Red Sox, many fans genuinely thought that the problems were behind the two sides. However, in what is probably going to be the biggest trade of the 2025 season, Devers was stunningly traded. The interesting thing is that Devers is willing to play all position for San Francisco despite fighting with Boston.
As a result, many fans aren’t too happy with Devers. This trade goes farther than just anger though, as it could shake up the MLB for years to come. The big question remains if one team may have just made a case for a World Series possibility.
