The Post-McDermott Era: Who Could Lead the Buffalo Bills Next?

After nine seasons, eight playoff appearances, and consistent regular-season success, the Sean McDermott era in Buffalo has ended. Despite turning the franchise around from a 17-year playoff drought to a perennial AFC contender, the inability to advance to the Super Bowl, characterized by multiple heartbreaking postseason losses, led to a necessary change at the top.

For Josh Allen, currently in the prime of his career, the team needs a head coach who can break the glass ceiling. The Buffalo Bills‘ job is arguably the most coveted opening on the market, offering a franchise quarterback and a strong core. Here is a look at who could be the next Bills head coach.

The Post-McDermott Era: Top Candidates to Replace Sean McDermott

1. Mike Tomlin (Former Steelers Head Coach)

While currently under contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers, speculation often surrounds Mike Tomlin. If the Bills are looking to make a blockbuster move for a proven, established leader, they might need to look at trading for a coach of his caliber. Tomlin brings instant credibility, an offensive-minded leadership approach, and a Super Bowl pedigree, which is exactly what Buffalo needs to take the next step.

2. Brian Flores (Vikings Defensive Coordinator)

If the Bills want to maintain a defensive identity but with a more aggressive approach, Brian Flores is a strong candidate. He has turned the Minnesota Vikings‘ defense into a top unit and has previous head coaching experience with the Miami Dolphins. Flores is known for his ability to maximize talent and command respect, and he could bring a “blitz-heavy,” high-energy style that is different from the conservative style that sometimes plagued McDermott.

3. Mike McCarthy (Former Cowboys Head Coach)

With his departure from Dallas, Mike McCarthy brings a proven track record, including a Super Bowl title. McCarthy is an offensive-minded coach who has worked with elite quarterbacks like Aaron Rodgers and Brett Favre, making him an ideal partner to help Allen continue his development. His experience navigating high-pressure situations could be beneficial for a team in “win-now” mode.

4. Joe Brady (Bills Offensive Coordinator)

If the organization believes that continuity on offense is key, promoting Joe Brady is a logical step. Since taking over as offensive coordinator in 2023, the offense has shown high-scoring potential and has adapted well to different personnel. While Brady lacks head coaching experience, he is highly regarded around the league and knows the roster well.

5. Mike LaFleur (Rams Offensive Coordinator)

As a rising star from the Sean McVay coaching tree, Mike LaFleur has drawn considerable interest for his role in transforming the Los Angeles Rams‘ offense. He offers a fresh, modern, offensive-minded approach that could maximize Allen’s talents and revitalize the team’s playbook.

Potential Dark Horse Candidates

Another Shanahan-tree coach, Bobby Slowik was once a hot commodity for the work he did as the offensive coordinator for the Houston Texans. His focus on turnover reduction and high-scoring offense makes him an intriguing option to turn the Bills into an offensive juggernaut. Mike McDaniel could also be a name you hear if the Bills want an offensive-minded coach, but this would be an unlikely hire.

If the front office prefers to promote from within, Bills defensive coordinator Bobby Babich has a deep knowledge of the current defensive roster. However, after a disappointing defensive performance in 2025, this may be less likely, especially considering that Brady would be the better in-house option.

The Path Forward

The search for a new head coach will likely focus on finding someone who can not only manage the game better than his predecessor but also bring a new perspective to the offense. The Bills are “one good coach” away from a Super Bowl trip, meaning they will not be looking to rebuild, but rather to re-tool immediately.

With the 2026 hiring cycle in full swing, the Bills’ decision will define the next chapter of Allen’s career. Whoever is hired will be expected to deliver a championship, not just another competitive season.
