NFL Execs Vote Matthew Stafford Midseason MVP

Matthew Stafford has gotten off to the best start of his career, and NFL executives believe he could be on his way to winning his first NFL MVP award.

NFL Execs Vote Matthew Stafford Midseason MVP

At the age of 37, in his 17th year with the Los Angeles Rams, quarterback Matthew Stafford could be on his way to his first MVP season. Stafford has the Rams sitting at 7-2 on the year, and LA looks like one of the best teams in the NFL right now, mostly behind Stafford’s performances week in and week out.

NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated polled different  NFL executives about midseason awards, and Stafford received the most votes as the current MVP of the 2025 season. When LA Rams head coach Sean McVay was informed about the executive’s decision to vote Stafford MVP, he had this to say about his quarterback.

“His value is the endless ability to elevate others and instill a genuine belief that because he is at the switch, we always have a chance,” McVay told Breer. “Plus, his toughness and love for competing are contagious and have become the identity of our team. A true coach on the field.”

A look at Stafford’s numbers

218/310 (70%); 2,427 yards; 25 touchdowns; 2 interceptions; 117.5 passer rating

Stafford is fourth in passing yards in the NFL, and the three players above him have all played an extra game. However, Stafford leads the NFL in touchdown passes with 25, which is five more than the second-place Jared Goff. He has 25 touchdowns to two interceptions. In his last six games, he has thrown 20 touchdown passes and zero interceptions. He is playing the position at another level right now.

Stafford’s advanced numbers are also strong; his expected points added (EPA) for quarterbacks ranks fourth. He has the second-best passing grade at Pro Football Focus (PFF), and he is among the league leaders in big-time throws.

His full-season projection is 4,600 yards, 47 touchdowns, and two interceptions. If that is the case, Stafford should win his first MVP this season.

MVP is a narrative award as well as a numbers award

It is clear that Stafford will have the numbers and, most likely, the wins to garner serious consideration for MVP this season, but does he have a narrative to accompany them? I think the fact that Stafford has always been considered an underrated player for most of his career might be a good enough narrative.

NFL players, both old and new, have often been on the record saying that Stafford is one of their favorite players to watch, and that he has never quite received the credit he deserves for his exceptional talent—a Hall of Fame-caliber player who has never gotten his just due. Because Stafford spent the bulk of his career losing in Detroit, many people view him as an unheralded talent who was in a difficult situation. As soon as he left Detroit, he became a Super Bowl champion with the Rams.

Since playing in LA, more people are starting to realize how good Stafford is, but an MVP award in 2025 would all but solidify Stafford as a Hall of Famer.

According to BETMGM Sportsbook, Stafford is the favorite for the MVP, and on Draftkings Sportsbook, he is the second.
