Top 5 New York Mets Prospects

The New York Mets farm system was at one point the strongest pitching system in the minors. Now that all those guys made the majors there is room for a different set of minor leaguers to make their mark. Here are the Top 5 Prospects in the New York Mets farm system.

Top 5 New York Mets Prospects

5. Robert Gsellman, RHP

Robert Gsellman broke onto the New York scene last season. He was not seen as one of the top pitching prospects but came into the Mets rotation late last season and pitched phenomenally. He went 4-2 with a 2.42 ERA in seven starts. The righty throws an average fastball that sits around 93 miles per hour, with a curveball, slider, and an above average changeup. Gsellman has some great command and is a ground ball pitcher. Rob is expected to join the big league rotation out of camp this season.

4. Thomas Szapucki, LHP

Thomas Szapucki opened some eyes last season. He had a 4-3 record with a 1.38 ERA and 86 strikeouts in 52 innings. The lefty has an above average fastball and curveball, but is still developing his changeup. Szapucki is still yet to show the ability to pitch a full season. However, the lefty has developed his way into one of the best pitching prospects in the Mets system.

3. Justin Dunn, RHP

Justin Dunn was the Mets first round pick in the draft last season out of Boston College. He pitched very well in his debut in the Penn League. He made eight starts and had a 1-1 record with a 1.50 ERA and 35 strikeouts. He has a free and easy delivery. Dunn throws a slider, curveball, and changeup that are all average right now but he is still developing. If Dunn could show the ability to stay healthy over a full season as a starter he has some huge potential in the future in New York.

2. Dominic Smith, 1B

Dominic Smith is one of the best first base prospect in all of baseball. He is a tremendous fielder and hits for a high average. Smith used to be out of shape, however he came into camp this season having lost a ton of weight. His power has also started to come to him as he hit 14 home runs in Double-A last season. Smith is looking more and more like the first baseman of the future in Queens.

1. Amed Rosario, SS

Amed Rosario is one of the top prospects in all of baseball. He hits for a high average and has some above average speed. Defensively, he is sure handed, quick, and has an outstanding arm at shortstop. Rosario has looked outstanding at short for the Mets this spring. He will be an elite long term shortstop for a long time to come in New York.
