Now that the offseason drama has hopefully been pushed aside it’s time for the New England Patriots to get down to business. NFL training camps officially got underway this week across the country and it is time to open a new chapter in Patriots history.
These are five players who could be on the bubble as the NFL preseason gets underway.
5 New England Patriots Bubble Players in 2018
Eric Rowe (CB)
Playing in place of Malcolm Butler in the Super Bowl, Rowe did a respectable job but was still burned by Nick Foles. Rowe is under contract for one more year but will receive heavy competition this preseason. With an already crowded backfield that includes 2nd round pick, Duke Dawson drafted out of Florida plus the addition of free agent Jason McCourty it may be the end of Rowe’s Patriots tenure.
Adam Butler (DE)
The second-year undrafted free agent started 16 games in 2017 but with the addition of Adrian Clayborn and Danny Shelton, Belichick may have to release him. Butler, a 2017 free agent from Vanderbilt, impressed the Patriots coaches with his strong work ethic last summer.
Geneo Grissom (DE)
This three-year veteran may also find himself looking for a new team. In his time has a Patriot Grissom has been released four times by Belichick. With free agent rookie Trent Harris fighting for a spot on the line, it may be the end for Grissom.
Mike Gillislee (RB)
The Patriots have an extremely filled backfield with free agent Jeremy Hill signed from Cincinnati, Gillislee could be the odd man out. Gillislee was claimed late last year from Buffalo and played nine games running for a total of 383 yards. With number one draft pick Sony Michel out of Georgia sure to make the roster, the Patriots could have to say goodbye to Gillislee.
Phillip Dorsett/Kenny Britt (WR)
With the loss of Danny Amendola to the Miami Dolphins, the Patriots have some stiff competition in the receiving department. Not to mention Julian Edelman will be suspended for four games. The Patriots acquired Dorsett last year from Indianapolis for quarterback Jacoby Brissett. Dorsett played in 16 games and had a decent performance in the Super Bowl. If Britt does not have an effective preseason Dorsett should win the job.
