Last Friday, a college football game took place that the Virginia Cavaliers will forever remember. The Cavs were able to take an early 14-0 lead before the Florida State Seminoles thundered back with 21 unanswered points. The game would eventually be tied at 21-21 at halftime. The Cavs continued to be a problem, eventually building a 35-28 lead before FSU tied the game with 37 seconds remaining. In overtime, both teams got a field goal.
However, in the 2nd OT, Virginia quickly scored a touchdown and a 2-point conversion. Florida would wind up throwing an interception on a 4th & 12, which led to a Virginia win and a scary moment.

As UVA blitzed Tommy Castellanos, Castellanos proceeded to throw the ball into the endzone. The ball was intercepted, and immediately, the crowd stormed the field. This immediately left people concerned for both players in the endzone. Virginia defenders were visibly trying to get to their teammate as the crowd flooded the field. As a result of the incident, the ACC has fined the University of Virginia $ 50,000 due to the storming.
The goal of the ACC is to prevent fans from rushing the field, which could result in serious injuries to either the fans or the players. If such an incident were to happen again at UVA, another fine of $ 100,000 would be issued.
19 People Injured As a Result of the Storming
19 people were injured thanks to the storming. The college football world is unaware of how bad these injuries are. However, the coach, Tony Elliott, didn’t really address the issue. Elliott claimed that he envisioned such things happening (the win, not really the storming) when he took the job. Since he was hired, Virginia has struggled mightily. Last season, UVA was 5-7. UVA has not reached a bowl game since 2019.
Such a win has propelled the Cavaliers into the top 25, and has made them a potential threat in the weird ACC this season. So far, only Miami has looked truly dominant in the ACC. Georgia Tech is undefeated, but it doesn’t feel like that will last very long at all. As for Florida State, Friday was a horror movie for the highly hopeful Seminoles.
Of course, the formerly No. 4 team in the nation, Clemson, and the No. 16 SMU, are both unranked and have struggled. Clemson has gone 1-3 and looked like one of the worst teams in the ACC. Meanwhile, SMU is 2-2 with two close losses. As for other teams like the North Carolina Tar Heels… Ouch. The ACC looks like one of the weakest conferences of the Power 4 again so far this season.
Florida State Playoff Hopes Crushed For Now
After defeating No. 8 Alabama, FSU didn’t stop looking really good. Under the new QB Castellanos and with a reborn defense under former Nebraska Defensive Coordinator Tony White, FSU defeated East Texas A&M 77-3 and then Kent State 66-10. In other words, FSU looked even better then they did in 2023 to begin the season. Such a loss to UVA is gut-wrenching, especially one week before taking on No. 3 Miami. For FSU, another loss could mean the end of their ACC dreams.
This loss is the complete opposite of what many expected. Now, FSU has got themselves quite a hole to dig themselves out of. Overall, no players were injured in the storming of the field, and of the 19 fans injured, it is not clear if any are major injuries. However, it goes to show that storming the field can be pretty dangerous. The fine also shows that it is something that conferences like the ACC want to end. Perhaps, it soon will end.
