As the season kicks off, there have already been amazing moments. From the New York Yankees nine-homer game, to the three walk-off wins by the Miami Marlins, the MLB season has been amazing so far. Lets rank the best teams in the MLB following an exciting weekend:
MLB Power Rankings: Week 2
1. Los Angeles Dodgers (5-0)
This will literally surprise no one. The Los Angeles Dodgers have been great to begin the season, as predicted. LA was able to handle the Detroit Tigers well and showed that they’re the best team in baseball.
2. New York Yankees (3-0)
To begin the season, the Yanks were ranked number 9 because it seemed as if New York had got worse. However, the Yankees clobbered the Milwaukee Brewers with some powerful offense and easily looked like the next-best team after LA. Don’t get too excited after opening weekend they say, yet, there was certainly nothing to be disappointed about.
3. New York Mets (1-2)
Sure, the New York Mets lost to the Houston Astros in an ugly weekend series for the Met’s offense. Yet, the message shouldn’t be ‘Everybody Panic! Instead, this series was better than not, as New York’s bullpen did not allow a run, while the rotation wasn’t bad either. The offense certainly was asleep, but the beast will soon awake (Watch out, Marlins).
4. San Diego Padres (4-0)
The San Diego Padres look good as they begin their season by eating the Atlanta Braves for dinner. After a 4-game sweep, perhaps the future is bright for San Diego.
5. Philadelphia Phillies (2-1)
The Philadelphia Phillies just did not look good against the Washington Nationals. Other than the second game of the series, the Phil’s offense was boring and looked ugly. Overall, though, this series didn’t say much about the Phillies as a team, and the Phils remain among the best teams in the league.
6. Baltimore Orioles (2-2)
Overall, the exciting series between the Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays was pretty good. However, the O’s pitching look relatively bad while the offense, the team’s strength, looked good. The O’s didn’t look as good as the Yankees, but Baltimore didn’t perform badly either to begin the season.
7. Texas Rangers (3-1)
The Texas Rangers had a great series against the Boston Red Sox to open the season. After losing on opening day, the team came alive and won the last three games. The Rangers’ performance against Boston earned them a high ranking.
8. Arizona Diamondbacks (2-2)
The Arizona Diamondbacks were able to prove their a good team in the final game of the series against the Chicago Cubs. After a late surge, the D-Backs look pretty great even after a split series.
9. Cleveland Guardians (2-1)
The beginning season ranking of 15 for the Cleveland Guardians was not true. Cleveland showed some nice potential and the team is not as bad as it seems. After a nice series against the Kansas City Royals, the Guardians look strong after opening weekend.
10. Boston Red Sox (1-3)
Honestly, the Boston Red Sox looked terrible against the Rangers. However, even though Rafael Devers forgot how to hit a baseball, Boston still will get a high ranking. The Sox will likely recover, and although their opening weekend was concerning, they should still be competitive.
11. Atlanta Braves (0-4)
The Atlanta Braves started their season on a great note! Losing a 4-games series by way of the sweep won’t get anyone a vote of confidence. Not to mention the next team Atlanta is set to play, well, none other than the Dodgers.
12. Houston Astros (2-1)
The Houston Astros weren’t looking all that good coming into 2025. However, the Astro’s strength may be their pitching. A series win is not all that good. However, Houston looked good against New York.
13. San Francisco Giants (2-1)
The San Francisco Giants did not look bad at all after a good series against the Cincinnati Reds. The Giants offense worked well as San Francisco looks to compete against the juggernaut Dodgers and Padres in the NL West. The Giants get a vote of confidence after opening weekend.
14. Seattle Mariners (2-1)
The Seattle Mariners are not as bad as they seem. The Mariners have an amazing rotation, and if the offense is even mediocre, the Mariners should succeed as a team. The Mariners look like competitors to begin the season (for the AL West).
15. Chicago Cubs (2-4)
The Chicago Cub’s unfortunately begin the 2025 season harshly. The Cub’s not only had to play the Dodgers, they also had to play the new juggernaut D-Backs. Unfortunately for the Cub’s, Chicago doesn’t look too good after opening weekend.
16. Tampa Bay Rays (2-1)
It’s not exactly a thrilling surprise to defeat the Colorado Rockies to begin the season. However, Tampa Bay still looks dangerous with some young talent and remain right in the middle of good and bad teams in baseball to begin 2025.
17. St. Louis Cardinals (3-0)
One shouldn’t expect the St. Louis Cardinals to suddenly explode into an great team. However, St. Louis did look good against the Minnesota Twins. Perhaps not trading Nolan Arenado is not a bad idea? Maybe.
18. Kansas City Royals (1-2)
The Kansas City Royals don’t deserve to be laughed at for losing a 3-game series. However, there remains to be concerns. Kansas City barely made it into the playoffs last season and did not get much better coming into 2025. This team does not look all that good after opening weekend (Although, have hope KC fans!).
19. Toronto Blue Jays (2-2)
The Toronto Blue Jays probably are not respected enough. With the addition of Anthony Santander and the retaining of others, the Blue Jays genuinely could get to be a good team. After an exciting opening weekend, the Blue Jays however remain mediocre.
20. Detroit Tigers (0-3)
The poor Detroit Tigers don’t deserve that much of a fall. However, it is never a good thing to begin the season by being swept, even if that was by a really good team. The Tigers remain a mediocre team as well until Detroit can prove otherwise.
21. Los Angeles Angels (2-1)
Beating the Chicago White Sox is nothing too impressive whatsoever. However, nothing has really changed from last time the Angels were ranked. They remain ranked in the lower third in baseball.
22. Milwaukee Brewers (0-3)
The Brewers obviously looked lost against the Yankees. With Nestor Cortes being stomped and the Brewers already looked bad coming into 2025, it’s no surprise that the Brew Crew rank low after being just crushed by the Yankees.
23. Athletics (2-2)
The A’s didn’t perform bad or good against the Mariners. The series was simply competitive and really didn’t change the Athletics standing in the MLB other than getting the A’s some respect.
24. Cincinnati Reds (1-2)
Like many other teams, the Cincinnati Reds did not change their standing in the MLB after an opening series loss. The Red’s remain a bad team after being defeated by the Giants.
25. Miami Marlins (3-1)
The Marlins did amazing against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Of course, this was a boring series with two terrible teams heading up against each other. However, it’s hard to start the season with three walk-off winners and not gain some confidence. Maybe it’s not hopeless for Miami, although, here comes New York.
26. Washington Nationals (1-2)
Meh. Not much changed with the Nat’s series against Philly. The Nationals remain a bad team even after a win in the final game. Mackenzie Gore though looked awesome.
27. Minnesota Twins (0-3)
As harsh as it seems, this is a realistic ranking for the Minnesota Twins. The Twins were swept by the mediocre Cardinals while still looking terrible. The Twins look bad after opening weekend.
28. Pittsburgh Pirates (1-3)
Imagine basically having a bunch of young talent, letting it rot, and then getting mopped up by another terrible team. That’s the Pittsburgh Pirates for you! The Pirates look terrible after an embarrassing opening weekend against the Marlins.
29. Colorado Rockies (1-2)
The Rockies are justly plainly bad. Prepare for another… Fun season. This ranking surprises no one.
30. Chicago White Sox (1-2)
Well, at least the White Sox weren’t swept. The Chicago White Sox simply are the worst team still regardless of anything. It will take more than a win to move up the rankings for Chicago.
Overall, these rankings show the current state of many baseball teams. After opening weekend, however, don’t get to excited or too disappointed. There remains so much more baseball (and surprises), ahead.
