After Mark Vientos went down with a hamstring injury against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the New York Mets decided to call up a top prospect. Ronny Mauricio, who probably would have gotten to the MLB in 2024 if it wasn’t for a season-ending injury, was called up. Mauricio has never been a highly regarded prospect for the Mets, but he has undoubtedly shown that he should have been.
The Mets Have a Star in the Making
Just 3 Games into the Season, Ronny Mauricio Blast Massive 456 FT Shot
Mauricio’s 456-foot solo shot against the Colorado Rockies was the Mets’ longest home run of the season. This is something that Mauricio can do consistently. Mauricio’s first home run of his career went 444 feet, and his first base hit exit velo was 117 MPH. Mauricio has serious juice in his swing and reminds many of O’Neil Cruz and Elly Del La Cruz. Both players are stars, but they remain worthy of comparison for Mauricio.
Last season, I said just a few games into Viento’s season that he was a star in the making. Unfortunately, by 2025, the story had not remained the same. However, for the most part, Vientos was a star in the 2024 regular season and postseason. In my opinion, as long as Mauricio is able to keep the bat in the zone and not strike out as much as before, he is easily a star in the making.
Mauricio Is More Dangerous than Luisangel Acuna
The main reason why Luisangel Acuna is in the big leagues is his speed and defense. However, if there is one player who is similar to Acuna and maybe even better, it is Mauricio. Maurice can easily steal and bag, and can play both the infield and outfield. Mauricio is 9-9 steals so far in the big leagues and can play some great defense in the infield and outfield. Mauricio can play every infield position except first base and can play every outfield position as well. Even if Vientos was to return from injury, there is no doubt that Mauricio should stay in the big leagues.
Mauricio would be an extra-dangerous version of a utility man. However, Mauricio is capable of being much more than a utility man. With DH open and 2B and 3B all not really having starters, Mauricio can still find a spot in the Mets’ lineup if he continues his good play.
The End of the Mets’ Lineup Is Starting to Heat Up
One thing is for sure about the Mets: they have one of the biggest “big threes” in baseball. Francisco Lindor, Pete Alonso, and Juan Soto. However, at one point of the season, it felt like the Mets last few hitters in the lineup were useless compared to last season. However, with Mauricio, the Mets’ end of the lineup is starting to heat up. Jeff McNeil, Jared Young, and Francisco Alvarez are beginning to hit.
With six homers on Sunday, the Mets’ lineup showed that they can finally hit. And with a rotation that, for some reason, has performed as well as the Mets’ old rotation, which included Nolan Ryan and Tom Seaver (literally best start since this time), the Mets will rarely lose. The Mets are 42-24 with a little bit of an comfortable lead in the NL East, if they begin to win more and more, then the division is theirs.
Perhaps this injury, which is not good, will reveal something for New York. Ronny Mauricio is a player who can provide the Mets with something that many teams love- a bat with unimaginable speed. Every team wants an Elly Del La Cruz- perhaps the Mets already have theirs.
