NFL Fans Erupt After the League Calls Chop Robinson for Roughing Patrick Mahomes

Like it or not, that’s textbook roughing the passer in today’s NFL. The Kansas City Chiefs came out firing Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium, needing just four plays to march 67 yards downfield and punch in an opening-drive touchdown against the Miami Dolphins. But what looked like a potential runaway quickly turned into a dogfight. By the end of the third quarter, Kansas City’s lead had shrunk to just four points, with the Chiefs facing a massive third-and-9 from their own 5-yard line.

With less than three minutes left in the third, Miami still had its upset hopes very much alive, trailing 14-10 while Kansas City was pinned deep in its own territory. Patrick Mahomes dropped back and fired an incomplete pass, but the play didn’t end there. Dolphins pass rusher Chop Robinson came charging in and delivered a big hit on the Chiefs quarterback, setting off a roughing-the-passer flag.

On third-and-9 from the Kansas City 5, Mahomes dropped back and looked to get the ball to Rashee Rice. Just as he released the pass, Robinson arrived in a hurry, drilling the Chiefs quarterback and driving him into the turf. Robinson landed on top of Mahomes with his full body weight, while the pass fell incomplete.

The flag came out immediately: roughing the passer.

Robinson didn’t go high, didn’t go low and certainly wasn’t late. The issue? He landed on Mahomes with his full weight after making contact. In today’s NFL, that’s enough to get the yellow laundry flying.

The penalty itself ended up being a non-factor. Miami was also flagged for defensive holding on the play, which would have given Kansas City a first down anyway. But that didn’t stop NFL fans from turning the call into a full-blown debate on social media.

NFL Memes jumped into the conversation on X, sharing a clip of the play and joking “Chop Robinson called for Roughing the Passer on Patrick Mahomes after forgetting to lay down a pillow before they contacted the ground”

Another fan pushed back on the flag, arguing: “Ball still in his hand when contact was initiated. Defender tries to brace himself so the full weight isn’t taken. What else is he supposed to do?”

This Chiefs fan wasn’t having any of it, firing back: “That’s been a penalty for a decade.”

Another fan took the frustration a step further, writing: “Can’t wait till Patrick retires. This is so fucking dumb. The league should be embarrassed”

A Chiefs supporter, meanwhile, defended the call and kept it simple: “Watch this in real time idiots. He drove him into the ground with his body weight. Flag”

Then came the criticism of the officiating crew, with one fan simply writing: ““I call it as I see it””

Another Chiefs fan jumped into the pile-on, pointing out that the rule is hardly new:  “People acting like this just became a penalty today LMAO The Chiefs hatred is delicious. 3-0”

And finally, one fan summed up the argument from the other side: “That’s a roughing the passer penalty. His entire body weight deliberately slammed onto Mahomes. It’s called a pile driver.”

Safe to say, NFL fans were anything but on the same page about this one.

Chop Robinson Lands on Mahomes and the Yellow Flag Comes Flying

The play was a perfect snapshot of the tightrope pass rushers have to walk in today’s NFL. Robinson got home just as Mahomes released the ball, making contact in the rule-approved strike zone. But with all that momentum carrying him forward, Robinson ended up landing on the veteran quarterback anyway—even after trying to let go to avoid driving him into the turf.

And that’s where the flag came flying.

The second Robinson landed on top of Mahomes, the officials had a textbook reason to throw the yellow laundry. It might feel harsh from a defender’s perspective, but this is a roughing-the-passer call the NFL has enforced for years as the league continues to put quarterback safety front and center. That isn’t changing anytime soon.

The Chiefs ultimately turned the drive into points, tacking on a field goal to push their lead to 17-10. Kansas City never looked back, closing out a 24-10 win over Miami.
