Ichiro Suzuki continues to etch his name into the Major League Baseball record books. He is making it a real safe bet that he will one day end up enshrined into the Hall of Fame. Sunday afternoon in the Miami Marlins 4-2 win over the Chicago Cubs, Suzuki made a little more history, this time just by starting in the game.
The Record
Per Elias Sports, at 43 years and 246 days old, the 17-year veteran became the oldest starting centerfielder since 1900. Suzuki passed the feat previously held by Hall of Famer Ricky Henderson. Henderson made his last start in center in 2002 at 43 years and 211 days old.
Marlins manager Don Mattingly told reporters, that he had no idea of the accomplishment when he penciled Suzuki into the lineup. “I thought about it though in the first: ‘We have a 40-something out there in center.’ But he doesn’t play like that. He runs good, throws good, so it didn’t feel like that.”
This accomplishment is just another milestone to add to a long list in the 17-year Hall of Fame career of Ichiro Suzuki.
