The Toronto Maple Leafs have some resources at their disposal, believe it or not. A trade for a top-four defenseman might be the next deal; ideally, the player signs long-term with the club. There are a few packages that the Leafs could send, which includes young players and/or prospects, but one also that could be proposed in sending goaltender Anthony Stolarz out to a team in exchange for a defenseman and an upcoming goaltender.
A deal would give a fresh look at the defensive core. Several defensemen are on the list of unrestricted free agents at the end of this season. Notable names will either test the market or have a new home by the 2027 NHL Trade Deadline.
This suggests the Maple Leafs GM and company will be patient throughout the season, until February, when the stakes will be even higher. At what cost will the Leafs’ GM make moves to secure a Stanley Cup berth, and which players is the team looking at? A young forward or even Stolarz to start a package for a defenseman makes sense, given the assets the Maple Leafs possess.
We’ll go through three players on this list who could be a good fit for the Maple Leafs’ roster.
Potential Top-Four Defenseman the Maple Leafs Could Trade For
Simon Edvinsson
This could be the most realistic prediction, but acquiring defenseman Simon Edvinsson would be the ideal grab for the Maple Leafs franchise. He would be a welcome addition to the roster and would make an impact against the other teams in the NHL. His gameplay speaks for itself, and his physical play and goal-scoring touch would come in handy.
Edvinsson is a top-notch defenseman who can play the minutes, is physically tough, and brings plenty of grit to his team, something they desperately need. This would lift the Leafs’ defensive system. He would also fit into Daniel Alfredsson’s style of gameplay. He is a seasoned veteran, but still young, and plays with a speedy approach. He can easily advance the puck after creating turnovers and be that guy for the Leafs while playing alongside defenseman Chris Tanev.
Alexander Nikishin
Alexander Nikishin would be an ideal candidate to join the Maple Leafs’ defensive system. His attributes include excellent shot-blocking and a strong physical approach as a gritty defender. He can take charge of the puck from the defensive end to the neutral zone; he isn’t afraid to shoot on net.
He can also provide a strong forecheck and produce offensively. He is coming off a fresh Stanley Cup-winning postseason and could be a player the Maple Leafs are looking to add. He also plays with confidence and will be one to watch if he does become available for trade.
Vince Dunn
Another defenseman that comes to mind is Seattle Kraken’s Vince Dunn. He is another tenacious defenseman with a high hockey IQ on the back end, much like Tanev. He is physical and knows how to create turnovers for his team. He has a well-rounded game that can contribute in many ways.
The Maple Leafs might have to move around some money to make this one work for the season but they certainly could if they wanted.
All three aspects would be ideal acquisitions for the Leafs; however, it will be interesting to see what direction the GM takes as this develops. These three names could be the best option for the Leafs, and certainly give the team an added boost with a young player. The team is still waiting to see who is the best fit overall.
John Chayka said the team isn’t in any hurry to pull the trigger, but the moment will come by the end of this season, and as the season progresses, the fanbase will be in for a treat.
