3 College Football Rivalry Games This Saturday
Holy War (Utah vs. BYU)
It’s the final big rivalry game on Saturday and it is a potential instant classic between two now Big 12 conference teams. The Utah Utes are traveling to Provo to take on the BYU Cougars for a heated rivalry between the two schools. Despite, the two won’t be playing for a trophy, however, that doesn’t change much with both teams actively hating each other. This year’s matchup will be between two top 25 teams with the Cougars being ranked in the top 15 at No. 15 and the Utes being ranked No. 23 after demolishing Arizona State at home last week.
Overall, Utah owns the all-time series record 62-36-4 but BYU has won the last two games in the series last season and in 2021. The Utes won every single matchup from 2010-2019, which tells a lot about what the series has been historically. Any team can win this game this year and both teams feel even on paper. Third Saturday in October (Tennessee vs Alabama)
It’s a big time SEC rivalry going on this Saturday in Tuscaloosa. The No. 11 Tennessee Volunteers are taking on the No. 6 Alabama Crimson Tide for the “Third Saturday in October” rivalry game. It got its name because the game was played on said date every season up until the 1992 season when the SEC expanded and made the East and West Divisions. From 1995 to 2024, the matchup has only happened nine times on the date. However, it doesn’t change how competitive this rivalry has been, more specifically in the past few seasons.
Alabama owns this rivalry historically 59-40-8 dating back to 1901 and it was largely due to the Nick Saban era at Alabama where the Crimson Tide won 15 straight matchups from 2007 to 2022. Alabama has also won 10 straight games at home against Tennessee in this rivalry. However, Tennessee has become more and more competitive in this rivalry in the past few seasons, pulling off upsets back-to-back meetings at home in 2022 and last season.

Jeweled Shillelagh (USC vs Notre Dame)
Another ranked rivalry matchup this weekend between the USC Trojans and Notre Dame Fighting Irish. This rivalry dates back to 1926 and is one of the more storied rivalries due to the history for both programs. Both teams have won a combined 24 national championships and have 15 total Heisman Trophy winners between the two schools as well. It has a interesting yearly schedule as well. When Notre Dame hosts the Trojans, it is on the third weekend of October, but when USC hosts the Irish, it is the weekend following Thanksgiving.
Overall, Notre Dame holds the series lead 50-37-5 and holds the trophy series 37-30-3 all time. Since 2015, Notre Dame has owned the rivalry winning all but two matchups and the Irish have won the last two matchups.
