Following an offseason focused on defensive quality and strategic retooling, the Carolina Panthers defense look to dramatically improve their defensive output. With elite talent now spanning all three levels of the field, becoming a top-10 defense seems highly achievable.
Will the Carolina Panthers Defense Significantly Improve?
Radical Roster Overhaul
Just two years ago, Carolina allowed an NFL-record 534 points. Since that historic low, defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero has orchestrated a significant turnaround, aided by an aggressive front office. This offseason, general manager Dan Morgan brought in premium defenders to patch any lingering holes.
The most prominent acquisitions include Jaelan Phillips, a high-motor pass-rusher that brings elite pressure to the edge. The Panthers also brought in Devin Lloyd, a former Jacksonville Jaguars standout and Pro Bowl-caliber off-ball linebacker. Lloyd adds size, instincts, and immediate playmaking ability to the middle of the field.
Carolina also selected Lee Hunter in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft, the aggressive defensive tackle out of Texas Tech gives Carolina immediate depth and interior presence. The Panthers defense really struggled with generating a consistent pass rush and they also struggled to stop the run in 2025, so they put a lot of effort into improving the front seven in the offseason.
Anchors at Every Level
A defense is only as strong as its key playmakers, and the Panthers defense finally boast franchise-caliber cornerstones in every section of their scheme.
Up front, defensive tackled Derrick Brown remains the undisputed anchor of the trenches. Known for his ability to stuff the run and collapse the pocket, Brown’s presence will only be amplified by the arrival of Hunter and the edge-rushing prowess of Phillips.
At the second level, the addition of Lloyd fundamentally transforms the linebacking corps. His sideline-to-sideline speed and coverage ability allow Evero to run more exotic, unpredictable blitz packages without sacrificing underneath protection.
In the secondary, Jaycee Horn leads an incredibly deep and talented cornerback room. Paired with Mike Jackson, Carolina boasts arguably one of the best cornerback duos in the NFL. If Horn stays healthy, the secondary will be capable of locking down most opposing wide receivers, forcing opposing quarterbacks to hold the ball longer and giving the upgraded pass rush ample time to get home.
The Blueprint for a Top 10 Defense
Ranking inside the top 10 is no longer a pipe dream, it is an expectation dictated by the roster’s talent, depth, and the continuity of Evero’s coaching system. For the Panthers defense to make this leap, these major factors must align.
The secondary, particularly Horn, has battled injury setbacks in the past. If the core starters can play 16-17 games, the scheme’s ceiling instantly rises.
The addition of Phillips should resolve some of the pressure deficiencies from previous years. If Carolina can generate consistent pressure with a four-man rush, their secondary will force an abundance of turnovers.
With a linebacker like Lloyd patrolling the intermediate zones, the Panthers should significantly improve on third-down. The biggest issue the Panthers defense had in 2025 was that they couldn’t get off the field on third-down. If they can become just a top-15 team at getting stops on third-down, it will make life that much easier for the Panthers defense.
Final Thoughts
I won’t pretend that the defense doesn’t have a low floor if things don’t go as smoothly as projected, but the talent is finally there and now the pressure is all on Evero to get the most out of his unit. While the offense continues to find its footing, the defense has the personnel to carry the team. Between the massive influx of veteran talent and natural scheme familiarity under Evero, the Panthers defense has all the ingredients to become a top-10 unit this season.
