Will Jonah Coleman have a breakout performance? Check out my Broncos vs. Panthers preview.

Broncos vs. Panthers Preview: Who Wins the Week 9 Showdown?

Admittedly, the Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers are my favorite NFL teams, so of course I have to do a Broncos vs. Panthers preview. The Broncos (6-2) travel to Charlotte on Sunday to face the Panthers (3-4) at Bank of America Stadium. Both teams enter Week 9 atop their respective divisions, but they’re heading in vastly different directions.

The Broncos are riding a wave of momentum following a dramatic 28-24 fourth-quarter comeback victory over the rival Kansas City Chiefs, securing four consecutive wins. Conversely, the Panthers are searching for stability after dropping back-to-back games, including a loss against the Green Bay Packers that prompted the firing of defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero.

Any comprehensive Broncos vs. Panthers preview must analyze how this matchup presents a textbook battle of a highly disciplined, ascending squad trying to avoid a classic trap game against a desperate home underdog fighting to maintain its grip on the NFC South.

Broncos vs. Panthers Preview

The Bo Nix Evolution and Denver’s Offense

After a slow start to the 2026 campaign, Bo Nix is beginning to show signs of life under Sean Payton‘s play-calling. Nix has now logged five consecutive games without throwing an interception, capping off Week 8 with his first passer rating over 100 this season. The Broncos’ offense has suddenly unlocked an explosive edge, scoring 28 or more points in consecutive games.

A major catalyst has been the return of rookie Jonah Coleman from a sprained ankle. Coleman has completely transformed Denver’s backfield, dominating the second half against Kansas City with a 51-yard reception and the game-winning touchdown run.

Denver’s offense appears to be finding its rhythm at the perfect time. A crucial element of this Broncos vs. Panthers preview is evaluating Payton’s plan to avoid third-down stumbles, where the Broncos statistically rank last in the league in third-down conversions, and exploit a Carolina red-zone defense that gives up touchdowns on 80% of opponent trips.

Bryce Young’s Protection Crisis

For the Panthers, the early-season optimism surrounding Bryce Young‘s MVP-caliber flashes has hit a wall. The biggest issue isn’t necessarily young; it’s the decimated offensive line in front of him. Starting tackle Taylor Moton is out for the season, and Ikem Ekwonu has yet to see the field after a devastating injury in last year’s playoffs. Forced to start young players like Monroe Freeling, Carolina surrendered six sacks against Green Bay and has allowed 23 on the year.

When given time, Young has shown he can distribute effectively to weapons like Tetairoa McMillan, who leads the team with 569 receiving yards. Running back Chuba Hubbard has also been a steady workhorse, racking up 540 rushing yards and seven total touchdowns. However, every standard Broncos vs. Panthers preview must highlight that if offensive coordinator Brad Idzik cannot establish a quick-hitting passing game or a reliable rushing attack to take pressure off of Young, it will be a long afternoon for the home team.

Key Matchups

The game will likely be won or lost in the trenches when Carolina drops back to pass. Denver’s defense, coordinated by Vance Joseph, ranks top-five in the NFL with 23 sacks. Defensive end Zach Allen, Nik Bonitto, and Jonathon Cooper harassed Patrick Mahomes last week, with the team tallying two sacks and 10 quarterback hits.

Carolina promoted Todd Wash to interim defensive coordinator specifically to stop the run. Wash may shift the scheme from Evero’s base 3-4 to more aggressive four-man fronts. While this might throw a strategic curveball at Payton, the tactical reality of this Broncos vs. Panthers preview dictates that a new system leaves an injured, thin Carolina secondary exposed to play-action shots if Carolina overcommits to stopping the run.

The Last Word and Prediction

This has all the makings of an emotional trap game for Denver. Traveling to the East Coast for an early 1:00 PM ET kickoff after a massive emotional win against a division rival is a historical recipe for a flat start. The Panthers are desperate, rested after a mini-bye, and playing under the energy of a new defensive play-caller.

Expect Young and Hubbard to keep this close throughout, with help from a Denver offense that tends to stall early in games as well. However, the premium mismatch anchoring this Broncos vs. Panthers preview remains Denver’s elite pass rush against Carolina’s heavily backup-dependent offensive line. In the fourth quarter, look for Allen and Bonitto to force critical mistakes from Young, allowing Nix and Coleman to make enough plays to close it out. Denver stays hot and protects their lead in the AFC West.

Prediction: Broncos 24-20
