New York Mets outfielder Brandon Nimmo is enjoying a breakout 2018 season. In what has been a very disappointing first-half, Nimmo has been one of the few bright spots for the Mets. At the beginning of the season he wasn’t guaranteed playing time. These days, he is an everyday starter and deserved a spot in Washington with the games biggest stars.
Numbers Don’t Lie
Despite the recent struggles, Nimmo is getting on-base at a clip of .373 through 85 games. Day in and day out, he is finding a way to get on base, wether it be his 37 walks or his 13 hit by pitches. Nimmo has also shown some unexpected power, roping 11 doubles and 13 home runs with a .490 slugging percentage and a .863 OPS. Lets not forget that he put up all of these number over a small sample size. Just imagine the numbers he could put up over a full year.
Passes the Eye Test
Nimmo has done nothing but show everyone why is was a first round pick. He has shown that he has the potential and ability to be a complete five tool player. Nimmo gets on base, drives runs in, hits for power and plays strong defense in the outfield. He also always plays hard, and gives 100 percent effort every single time he steps on the field. That is the type of player that should be recognized within the league.
Good for the Game of Baseball
Brandon Nimmo has been a gift sent to New York Mets fans. His hustle and infectious enthusiasm easily make him a fan favorite. Nimmo plays and approaches the game the right way. Major League Baseball needs to promote a guy like Nimmo more than they currently are. There is no better stage to promote Nimmo and his approach to the game and the media, than the ASG. He is a lead by example type of player, and despite all the achievements is as humble as can be.
Who Should Have he Replace?
Just look at the numbers to answer this debate. Nimmo has posted a 2.5 WAR at this point in the season. That mark is better than all but one of the six outfielders on the National League roster. Nimmo could’ve easily taken the place of Nick Markakis, Lorenzo Cain, Christian Yelich, or Charlie Blackmon.
Last Word
Brandon Nimmo has turned himself into a star before our very eyes. Wether you accept it or not, he no doubt belongs in DC for the All Star Game. He easily could make a better case than any of the current outfielders on the roster. The snub does not matter Nimmo however, he is just proud to “even be in All Star conversations.” This is the type of humbleness and pure love of the game MLB needs to promote. Brandon Nimmo belonged at the 2018 MLB All Star Game.
