Biggest Quarterback Questions for 2024 (pt.1)

With preseason in full swing, all 32 NFL teams are looking into who will be making the cut(s) for 2024. The rookie class from this past draft will be finding a way to start hot out of the gate, while the veterans will try and cement their status as the current starters. However, big questions still remain unanswered from the offseason, particularly at the quarterback position. A host of signal callers got their big contract extensions, with varying degrees of reception. Others, however, remain on the fence as to what to do with their current field generals moving forward.

Here are some of the biggest quarterback questions lingering into the 2024 regular season.

In Goff We Trust?

Detroit Lions field general, Jared Goff, has gotten a full career resurgence since being traded from the Rams, to put it lightly. Though he had a shaky start in 2021, going 3-10-1, Goff and company got to work and reversed their fortunes in a relatively short amount of time. Detroit proceeded to take the NFC North title last season and made their presence felt in the postseason. Building off the momentum from the 2023 campaign, the Motor City sought to keep as many key pieces around as possible.

Detroit and Goff agreed to a four-year, $212M contract extension, with $170M guaranteed, setting the next round of big-name signings in motion. Hopefully, both Goff and the Lions maintain their upward trajectory and reignite their chances at the ever-elusive Lombardi Trophy.

Too Much “Love” for Jordan?

The Green Bay Packers have experienced quarterback stability that most teams would covet, with Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers around for 15+ seasons each. The latter’s successor, Jordan Love, took fans and critics by surprise in posting 4,000+ passing yards and 32 touchdowns in his first season as a full-time starter. With an even more surprising playoff run, Packers fans will have lots to look forward to this coming season.

That being said, many of the aforementioned fans and critics questioned the reasoning behind Love’s four-year, $220M extension after just one full season under center. This may not bode well for Green Bay’s effort to build the rest of the team. But time will tell how this investment in #10 will pay off.

Tua Tagovai… How Much?

With the arrivals of head coach, Mike McDaniel, and wide receiver, Tyreek Hill, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was given an actual chance to showcase his abilities as a starting quarterback. He may have thrown a career-high 14 interceptions this past outing, but he also led the league in passing yards at the same time. He also has boasted a Top Five QB rating in his last two seasons, thanks to McDaniel’s coaching. Though their playoff woes continue, Miami will surely find a way to correct that mistake.

Displaying their faith in Tagovailoa, the Miami Dolphins extended his tenure with a four-year, $212.4M deal, the biggest in franchise history. Many critics still question his durability and ability to improvise when kept inside the pocket. But the strides he’s clearly made in recent outings cannot be denied.
