Houston Astros: Three Names To Know For General Manager Job

The Houston Astros are in search of a new General Manager after the firing of Dana Brown. The franchise is currently looking for their next general manager, with already deciding the fate of manager Joe Espada, who will not return for the 2027 season with a manager search to be conducted as well.

Three Possible Names for Houston Astros General Manager Vacancy

1. Kevin Ibach

Assisstant General Manager Kevin Ibach would be a strong choice for the Astros as the franchise is looking for the next general manager and Ibach’s body of work is nothing to sneeze at all, especially on how this Tampa Bay Rays roster was built, with being ranked 23rd in spending. Some of those players were drafted and developed under Ibach. For example, the Rays’ big thumpers, like outfielder Victor Mesa Jr., whom Ibach kept an eye on after attending a 2018 workout in Miami and then finally acquired from a trade with the Miami Marlins in 2026.

The Rays team overall is well structured, despite the lack of big spending; however, that does not put the team at a disadvantage at all. Ibach has had a hand in shaping up this roster overall, and it will be interesting to see if Ibach were selected for the job and what kind of vision for the Astros he could have for them.

In 2025, Ibach was promoted to assistant general manager and has since done a very good job for the Rays. This one possible candidate may be a long shot overall but there could be a chance that the Astros could target.

2. Mike Chernoff

Mike Chernoff has done well for the Cleveland Guardians in his time as general manager and has built consistent rosters that have done well in the regular season and the postseason up to this point. The Guardians do not have a huge payroll but do a good job at developing players in-house and develop into good players at the big-league level, which again is the responsibility of Chernoff, but he has done well. Players such as left fielder Steven Kwan and signing third baseman Jose Ramirez to a contract extension to improve the team and keep the core. This is all of Chernoff’s body of work developing and building the rosters.

Chernoff would offer a different perspective but is strong on the analytics, and that is what the Astros do thrive on and have for quite some time, though the team has gotten away from that method when trying to build rosters as of recently.

3. Charles Cook

Assistant general manager Charles Cook has been with the Astros since 2015, learning under the likes of former front office personnel such as Jeff Luhnow, James Click and recently released front office personnel, Dana Brown. Cook could bring a new perspective overall to the organization, However, that has been met with resistance due to the fact that it would just be the same as running it back with everyone instead of trying to get someone who has fresh ideas for the organization.

But one could beg to differ, due to the fact that Cook could bring something entirely fresh to the table, especially given what Cook has learned over the years since arriving at the Astros as an intern and then being moved up in the front office. Cook has a solid body of work, especially when looking for players that meet the criteria that the Astros want for a player.

Before becoming an assistant general manager for the Astros, Cook has held four roles for the Astros, which are senior director of player evaluation, baseball operations coordinator, manager of amature scouting analysis, and director of player evaluation. Cook does have a feel for what the organization wants to do overall and, again, the players that are needed.

Cook has navigated uncertainty in the front office before. For example, in 2020, Cook helped navigate a constrained 2020 draft to where the Astros were stripped of a first-round pick and second round pick. With working a small bonus pool, Cook and the front office were able to draft right-handed pitcher Alex Santos II and outfielder Zach Daniels.

The Last Word

The Astros must find the correct hire otherwise the team will be in the same position as the past couple of years and must get back to developing elite talent. These last couple of years, dating back to 2023 have not been good enough for this franchise overall and must make the correct hire to get back to the moutaintop to where the Astros once belonged.
