That’s the case of Andre Drummond, the 6-foot-11 Detroit Pistons center who expressed his desire in becoming a big man perimeter shooter.
Drummond, the league’s rebounds leader last season, wants to improve his game by adding the 3-point shot to help his team get a better chance to make the playoff next season.
How is he going to improve from behind the arc? well, Drummond has started a serious routine that consists of shooting 200 3’s every day at practice.
In the Team USA minicamp in Las Vegas he showed he’s ready to display another offensive ability this upcoming season.
“I make at least 200 corners 3s every day before I leave the gym. I’m getting them up. I’m getting the same shot up over and over again, so I’m getting more comfortable with it. It’s been great so far“, Drummond told The Score.
It seems that one of the best big men on the NBA is getting involve in basketball’s evolution, so he’ll be targeting the rim from outside the arc starting the next season.
In the actual context, where teams like Golden State Warriors or the Houston Rockets have proved the three-point is a esential part of the game, the rest of the teams has to adapt themself to this new revolution if they aspire to get a chance.
Keeping in mind that Drummund has only made five 3’s on 30 atempts in his six years in the NBA, the Detroit Pistons will be please if Drummund becomes a good shooter from beyond the arc.
Numbers Rise
Drummond, who play in the All-Star Game for the first time last season, made a considerable adjustment to his game: he increased his free-throw stats.
The 24-year-old Center had three consecutive seasons shooting under 40% from the free-throw line, until last season, when he elevated to a 60,9%, which is still poor shooting, but has been the best free-throw stat of his career.
Now the big man aims the 15 feet shoot, where he missed all of the 15 shots he took last season.
Drummond has had three 0% season from the 3-point spot, though, if he boots his shots from beyond the arc, he will be a genuine threat in the NBA.
Advantage or Nah?
It is clear the Pistons might be better if their big man starts dropping 3’s. Although, that change won’t be as quick as the everyone thinks.
Drummond is a rebound machine. He has led the league in offensive rebounds for the last five seasons, and that quality makes him more value.
If Drummond takes seriously his role in shooting 3’s, he’ll spend less time on the paint, the place where he really hurts the opponents.
It could be a great decision for the Pistons Center to develop his game just as everyone else. Nonetheless, he cannot forget the side of the game where he is dominant.
