Kenneth Walker gets tackled against Seahawks

The Chiefs’ New Run-First Identity Just Hit a Major Roadblock Against Seattle

The Kansas City Chiefs came thumping in with the fog in Seattle on Sunday afternoon, but the Seattle Seahawks sent Patrick Mahomes and his crew right back out.

The Seahawks walloped the Chiefs 20-3 at Lumen Field Sunday Night.

Until Sunday, the Chiefs were undefeated for 2026-27 — and the Hawks’ record could use the sparkle. After six games of rocky play, the Chiefs caught a glimmer of the Seahawks that took home the Super Bowl championship in the 2025-26 season.

Chiefs’ Run-First Identity Stumbles Sunday Night

Patrick Mahomes’ Comeback Bid Falls Flat Against the Seahawks

It was a night to forget for the Kansas City Chiefs, and Harrison Butker had a chance to give Chiefs Kingdom a little hope late in the fourth quarter. Instead, the veteran kicker came up empty against the reigning Super Bowl champions on Sunday Night Football at Lumen Field.

Seattle had been firing on all cylinders, with its offense moving the chains and its defense making life miserable for Mahomes and Co. Still, the Seahawks’ lead sat at just 10 points when Mahomes orchestrated a 60-yard drive, giving Kansas City a golden opportunity to make it a one-score game.

It was the fifth time in seven possessions that the Chiefs had crossed into Seattle territory. But once again, the drive fizzled out, forcing Andy Reid to send Butker onto the field for a 45-yard field-goal attempt. The usually reliable kicker pushed it wide right, leaving three crucial points on the table. Just like that, whatever hope Kansas City had of mounting a late comeback took another hit, while the 12s at Lumen Field turned up the volume.

Butker’s miss was only part of the problem. The Chiefs had entered the season looking like they had finally found an offensive identity, with Kenneth Walker III anchoring a ground game that gave Mahomes more room to cook through the air. Walker had been a key piece of Kansas City’s unbeaten start, but facing his former team proved to be a different ballgame. Seattle bottled him up and dismantled the formula that had helped the Chiefs get rolling.

Seahawks Make Life Miserable for the Chiefs as Offense Fails

According to NFL statistics, Kansas City had piled up 2,070 yards of offense entering the matchup. Against Seattle, however, the Chiefs managed just 213 total yards, including a measly 50 on the ground. The Seahawks’ front seven won the battle in the trenches, shut down the run game, and left Mahomes with precious little room to operate.

The final score told only part of the story. Kansas City had scored just three points in a 27-3 loss to Tennessee on October 24, 2021, but Sunday brought an even more alarming first for the Mahomes era: the Chiefs failed to reach the red zone altogether. For an offense accustomed to putting up points in bunches, getting shut out of the end zone was a brutal reality check.

The loss snapped Kansas City’s unbeaten run and raised fresh questions about whether its offense can hold up when the ground game gets stuffed and the passing attack loses its rhythm. Against Seattle, the Chiefs didn’t just leave points on the field. They left their offensive identity looking for answers.

Last Word

Ultimately, the loss to Seattle exposed just how quickly the Chiefs’ high-powered offense can stall when injuries pile up and the run game gets stuffed. Mahomes can only do so much without his top targets and a clean pocket, and the Seahawks made him pay for every mistake. Now, Kansas City has to regroup quickly, because the Broncos won’t make life any easier. If the Chiefs want to stay on top of the AFC West, they’ll need to prove that Sunday’s offensive meltdown was a blip rather than a sign of bigger trouble.
