The first half of the 2026 college football season has proven to have one definitive rule: expect chaos in the ACC. As we head into Week 7, the ACC football power rankings will be looking significantly different this time around.
While one dominant powerhouse remains virtually untouched, a massive, unforgiving logjam of teams has formed below them. Driven by the Louisville Cardinals‘ offensive fireworks and the North Carolina Tar Heels’ marquee road upset, a new wave of contenders has entered the discussion. This week’s definitive ACC football power rankings reflect a major shakeup in the established order.
Here are the top 10 positions in our ACC football power rankings entering a high-stakes Week 7.
ACC Football Power Rankings Entering Week 7
1. Miami Hurricanes (5-0, 3-0 ACC)
There is no debate at the top of the ACC football power rankings. The Miami Hurricanes used their Week 6 bye to sit back and watch other highly ranked conference peers stumble. Boasting an unblemished record and led by two legitimate Heisman contenders, the Hurricanes remain firmly positioned as national heavyweights.
Refreshed from the open date, they prepare to host a matchup against their rival, the Florida State Seminoles. Miami has absolute control over the conference crown until proven otherwise.
2. Wake Forest Demon Deacons (5-1, 3-1 ACC)
Let’s be honest, nobody knew that the Wake Forest Demon Deacons were this good. After cruising to a 38-14 win over the NC State Wolfpack, Wake Forest climbs a couple of spots in the Week 7 ACC football power rankings. Gio Lopez passed for 303 yards and threw three touchdowns and has helped Wake Forest rapidly ascend into the true secondary tier of the conference.
Their balanced attack and stout opportunistic defense make them a legitimate threat to push for a spot in Charlotte.
3. SMU Mustangs (4-1, 2-1 ACC)
The SMU Mustangs sat idle in Week 6 but benefited from the chaotic results around them, as they also moved up a couple spots from the previous week. Kevin Jennings anchors a dangerous offense that has already secured a key win early in the year.
With a balanced roster and extra rest, SMU occupies a premium top-three slot in the ACC football power rankings with a golden opportunity to make a serious stretch-run push.
4. Duke Blue Devils (4-1, 1-1 ACC)
Manny Diaz’s team was riding high, but the narrow loss in Atlanta exposed some lingering depth vulnerabilities, as the Duke Blue Devils suffered a disappointing loss to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.
Duke remains an incredibly dangerous out, as they have one of the best running backs in the country in Nate Sheppard, along with a high defensive ceiling, but they fell slightly in our ACC football power rankings after missing a crucial opportunity to plant their flag as Miami’s primary challenger.
5. Pittsburgh Panthers (5-1, 2-1 ACC)
The Pittsburgh Panthers suffered a brutal setback at home against North Carolina, snapping their unblemished overall record. Despite the loss, Pat Narduzzi’s team remains a top-five team in the ACC football power rankings for now.
However, establishing consistent quarterback play will be a major factor for the Panthers moving forward. Time will tell whether this Pitt team can hang around with the top teams in this conference or not.
6. Louisville Cardinals (3-3, 2-2 ACC)
You won’t see me disrespect the Louisville Cardinals again, at least not as bad as I did last week by leaving them off my list entirely. Some will say that this ranking is still too low and it very well could be.
Jeff Brohm’s team snapped a frustrating skid by completely dismantling Florida State on Friday night. The offense found its rhythm again, allowing the Cardinals to surge up the ACC football power rankings, and they are likely a Week 7 win away from entering the top five.
7. Clemson Tigers (3-2, 2-1 ACC)
The midseason reset couldn’t have come at a better time for Dabo Swinney. After early-season turbulence, the Clemson Tigers have the opportunity to take advantage of a favorable schedule the rest of the way.
Sitting at number seven in the ACC football power rankings, Clemson still has the opportunity to become a legitimate contender if their lines control the trenches moving forward, but the pressure is on.
8. North Carolina Tar Heels (3-2, 1-1 ACC)
Don’t look now but the Tar Heels might be pretty good. There was legitimate reason to believe that this Tar Heels team could be sneaky good this year. They had no expectations from outsiders coming into the season, which meant the pressure was off for them and Bill Belichick.
The Tar Heels pulled off the surprise of the weekend by knocking off a ranked Pitt team on the road, putting them into the top 10 of the ACC football power rankings. Belichick got a significant milestone victory, and UNC is proving that they can play elite, disciplined football. If UNC defeats Duke in Week 7, then it is time to consider them a legit contender in the conference.
9. Florida State Seminoles (3-3, 1-2 ACC)
It has been a highly volatile road for the Seminoles, who plummeted down our ACC football power rankings after getting blown out by Louisville.
The talent is undeniably there and that is why they are still hanging on to a top 10 spot, but execution and errors have plagued their season. They face the ultimate test in Week 7 with a trip to Coral Gables to face Miami. If they aren’t competitive in this one, then this may be the last time they make an appearance in the top 10 for a while.
10. Virginia Cavaliers (4-2, 2-1 ACC)
The Virginia Cavaliers showed excellent grit by bouncing back from a 10-point halftime deficit to edge past the Syracuse Orange. Tony Elliot’s squad did exactly what they needed to do to keep a positive conference trajectory, securing the final spot in the ACC football power rankings.
I’m unsure about how good this Virginia team actually is. They had an impressive win against NC State in their opener, but they have honestly looked lackluster for the majority of the season. We should know more about this team after a tough road matchup against SMU in Week 7, but for now, they have done just enough to hang around the top 10.
