The Toronto Maple Leafs are poised to break out in a big way. However, three issues are undermining the team’s ability to compete consistently this regular season and reach the postseason. As we break down the scenarios, we will guide you through the factors that could help the Maple Leafs hold a solid record in their division.
The Maple Leafs Can Make a Strong Push This Season
From the moment John Chayka stepped in as the Maple Leafs’ GM, he made a broad impact in restoring the fanbase’s faith in the club. The old regime had clear flaws, and the need for change was evident. His offensive moves made a huge impact on how the team would perform, but questions remained about the team’s defense and how it would fare.
Most importantly, many journalists have raised concerns about this team’s ability to compete consistently. The real question is: Will the Maple Leafs be able to compete in the 2027 Stanley Cup Playoffs going down the stretch? This is where GM John Chayka is taking steps to build a playoff-worthy team that can compete at its best.
In one area, the Maple Leafs have plenty of options on the defensive end of the ice. One may believe that the scouts in the NHL for the Maple Leafs are taking charge of the team’s future and consistently traveling to other games in the NHL to take a look at how certain defensemen in the league would fare playing for the likes of captain Auston Matthews, forward William Nylander and the other elites on the roster.
This suggests the GM is on a hunt to build the ultimate roster that can play against the Florida Panthers or the Edmonton Oilers. However, it also suggests Chayka isn’t in any hurry to pull the trigger on the current defensive core and may have a card up his sleeve if he does.
Acquiring and signing Darren Raddysh was a strategic move to keep flexibility if this deal doesn’t work out, but it should, given the defenseman’s impact on the team. This deal was also meant to give the Maple Leafs strong playoff experience and the potential to be the X-factor at the blue line during the power play or tough-fort checks the lineup ensues.

Another Aspect the Toronto Maple Leafs Can Work With
The first of the second aspect Maple Leafs management might pursue is using one of the bottom-six forwards in a blockbuster trade to acquire a steady defenseman. As mentioned, the scouts are working hard to determine who would fit on the team. This also suggests the market may be open for a star defenseman in general.
Over the course of this season, Maple Leafs management will look at their options and know where they can go from here. The main aspect will be to acquire young defensemen or even recall a couple of upcoming defensemen from the Toronto Marlies. This would give the team ample space to work with and create the opportunities needed to build a team.
Chayka spoke about the defense:
Question: “You have one of the oldest and slower defense corps in the league. How can that work in terms of success, with the need to defend and transport pucks?”
Answer from Chayka: “I think when you add Chris Tanev back from last season, he makes a substantial difference. He’s not a young defenseman anymore, but I’ll take him on my team any day. He’s one of the best defensive defensemen. I think he moves the puck incredibly efficiently, and he’s playing on the game’s top lines every single night. I think when Darren Raddysh gets acclimated and can play the way he can play, he brings a lot to our back end as well. Overall, I’m pretty bullish on our defense.”
He continues, “As we work through a season and continue to evaluate different ways in which we can improve, we’re always going to be open to adding in different areas. Defense could be one, but at the same time, I think we need to give this group some time to show us where they’re at and what they can do. What we’ve seen from the first couple of games—and obviously, it’s early—we’ve been able to defend much more effectively than we have in the last few years. If we can continue to do that and continue to move pucks and get them in the forwards’ hands, that would be a good recipe for us.”
