Week 5 of the NFL season kicks off on Thursday, and the New York Giants are in trouble. Jaxson Dart is out for the season due to a knee injury in the first quarter against the Los Angeles Rams.
Now the Giants have to rely on Jameis Winston, the former No. 1 overall pick. He didn’t look good in relief of Dart against Los Angeles and, despite the win against the Tennessee Titans in Week 4, didn’t look good this past Sunday either. The Giants needed to look at other QB options. Here are five quarterbacks the Giants could target to save the season.

5. Jimmy Garoppolo, Free Agent
Jimmy Garoppolo is a very good option for the Giants since he is a free agent, which means they would not need to give up any picks or players. Garoppolo considered retiring and decided to stay. Many teams have gone after him, like the Los Angeles Rams and Arizona Cardinals.
But his best fit meant just being the Giants. After the injury to Dart and the bad game played by Winston, the Giants are definitely considering picking up a quarterback. Garoppolo is only 34 years old and can still lead a team to wins, which is exactly what the Giants will need.
4. JJ McCarthy, Minnesota Vikings
J.J. McCarthy is a third-string quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings. He is just a young quarterback, only 23 years old, who could still grow in potential. The Giants probably want someone who would not cost much in terms of a trade.
McCarthy lost the starting position to Kyler Murray, which means he is just sitting on the bench. If the Giants acquire him, they could help him grow into his true potential. Considering how bad McCarthy has been, the Vikings may want to move on sooner rather than later.
3. Anthony Richardson, Indianapolis Colts
Anthony Richardson would be another perfect target for the Giants. Richardson was a high pick, selected No. 4 overall in the 2023 NFL Draft. If the Giants pursue him, they could definitely make him a star.
Richardson has been injury-prone thus far in his career, halting his development and leading to him losing the starting job. But that doesn’t mean he can’t still be a superstar. Richardson is a dual-threat quarterback, and as we all know, John Harbaugh likes his dual-threat quarterbacks. Richardson just sits on the bench as a backup QB to Daniel Jones, and if he were to be traded to the Giants, he would definitely compete for the starting position.
2. Mac Jones, San Francisco 49ers
Mac Jones is a backup quarterback for the 49ers; he played 11 games last season because Brock Purdy got injured. Jones would definitely like to be a starting quarterback, and the Giants would be a perfect destination for him.
Jones is definitely a top candidate for the Giants after an impressive season in 2025. Jones could seek a trade to the Giants, considering he played well in his action in 2025. Jones is an unrestricted free agent next year, so the 49ers may be smart to trade him away.
1. Justin Fields, Kansas City Chiefs
Justin Fields is a great option to go after. Fields just hasn’t had the career that some might’ve imagined with how well he played at Ohio State. But if he were to get traded to the Giants, he could possibly rewrite his career and show his true potential.
Fields is a dual-threat quarterback, which Harbaugh is a fan of. If Fields could avoid getting injured, he could definitely be the top target for the Giants. Fields is only 27 years old, which means he could still grow into a talented quarterback – like he was projected to be.
