The Nittany Lions, for the first time in over a decade, have a new boss in the form of head coach Matt Campbell after James Franklin was fired midseason last year after disappointing results. Yet as the former coach found a new gig with Virginia Tech, where he looks poised for a renaissance and has already hit a lot of early benchmarks for success, that same level of results hasn’t been established in Happy Valley.
For the former Iowa State Cyclones coach, Campbell, he has a few simple obstacles in his path this season that he must propel the blue and white to prevail over, so let’s look at the simple laundry list of accomplishments that must rein in to appease an always fiery fanbase.

Dominate Trap Games & Non-Conference Schedule
It’s no secret that the new era will be welcomed into Beaver Stadium with a rather weak set of opponents, as a non-conference slate of practically bye games is followed by a Big Ten schedule in which the blue and white don’t have to face Ohio State, Oregon or Indiana.
This doesn’t mean the foot can be taken off the gas in any bit; the Nittany Lions still have a solid few opponents they must face, and if they want to stake a claim for a successful Year 1, it must not succumb to trap games or by playing down to opponents, something that they felt victim to a season prior. If this happens, all will be considered well; Campbell won the games he should’ve, and it sets the momentum for potential results against more prestigious conference schools. With the roster Campbell has constructed, highlighted by his former Cyclones gunslinger Rocco Becht, a cruise through the light part of the schedule is the bare minimum.
Defeat Michigan
Here’s where we get into those high-stakes clashes, when the blue and white head to Ann Arbor to face the Wolverines for the first time since 2023. In a game of two former Big 12 coaches in their first years, as Kyle Whittingham arrives to helm Michigan after leaving Utah, both he and Campbell have something to prove in this matchup, with the Penn State boss potentially having more to gain.
Penn State lost three straight games and hasn’t defeated Michigan since 2020, which occurred in the Big House. For the blue and white, a flip of the script is integral at this very moment, as it gives the Nittany Lions a chance to lap the more historic Wolverines in this transitional period for both schools. Campbell faced Whittingham when they were both at their previous jobs in a tight 2024 game decided by a field goal, and for a pair of coaches who may meet again down the line, maintaining the favorable record is fundamental.
Defend White Out
The official opponent for the “Best Show in College Sports” hasn’t yet been announced by the university, but all eyes are on West Coast foe USC for a potential date in the promotion. After last year’s “White Out” was spoiled by fellow PAC-12 addition to the Big Ten, Oregon, the Nittany Lions can’t fall to another newcomer in the conference in which they hold so much history, especially in the prized atmosphere that it brings to this specific game.
Getting a win in this one is probably the top of the bill for Campbell in year one, with all eyes on the program and a renovated Beaver Stadium; the result must follow suit.
Have a Successful Class of NFL Draftees and Rookies
For blue and white fans, there’s been a lot of panic over what has transpired on the recruiting trail, from flips or just disrespectful moments, like 4-star wide receiver Khalil Taylor launching a Penn State hat into the crowd on his commitment day. It’s early to judge Campbell, as he is still easing into the job and attempting to find a recruiting formula that aligns with the administration. Yet with this roster, there is a lineup of transfer talent and names who could jump to the NFL after this season; Campbell must guide this to happen, as it could help reinvigorate the Nittany Lions’ brand among recruits looking for a team to help them fulfill their pro potential.
The Nittany Lions were a portal program this offseason; sending those players off to the NFL proves those moves were calculated and can pay dividends, instead of just appearing like sentimental one-year rentals from his old school. That helps the fanbase, in turn, understand that a new method is at play and that the early losses can be stomached for the greater good.
