In 2025, one of the biggest positions that the New York Mets needed to fill in was center field. With all of the center fielders the Mets had in 2025, none of them actually produced. Not one of the center fielders successfully showed that they could bring the team much at all, at least offensively. In 2026, the new Mets center fielder Luis Robert Jr., is already showing that they made a good decision in trading for the potential superstar.
The Upgrade in Center Field Via Luis Robert Jr.
In 2025, the Center Field Position Was a Disaster
After the Mets decided not to re-sign Harrison Bader, New York decided to trade for a power-speed combo player in Jose Siri. This was even after Siri went from hitting .223 with 25 home runs in 101 games in 2023, to hitting 18 homers with a .171 average in 130 games. In other words, the Mets took a massive risk by trading for Siri during the offseason, a risk that didn’t work out well. Siri would wound up only appearing in 17 games, where he hit .063, with 0 homers and just one RBI. He also struck out in more than half of his appearances at the plate.
Siri would also be injured for the great majority of the season before the Mets decided to designated him for assignment. They then had to stick with Tyrone Taylor, who went from being decent offensively to being rather terriblamazin mets
e. In 113 games, Taylor went deep just twice and batted an abysmal .223, but he did provide stellar defense.
Finally, the amazin’s traded for Cedric Mullins, who actually should’ve provided some power and speed. Instead, in 42 games, he was a huge liability, hitting .182 with just two home runs. He was not re-signed as the Mets were probably disgusted by his performance in New York. The Mets center field in 2025 was just awful.
Mets Trade Acquisition Already Proving The Mets Made a Great Move
During the offseason, the Mets went crazy after losing Kyle Tucker to the Los Angeles Dodgers, signing Bo Bichette, and trading for Freddy Peralta, Tobias Myers, and of course there new center fielder Robert Jr. Robert Jr., in his first game in New York, had two RBIs and a walk that helped New York defeat the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-7. He was able to take it up a notch in his second game, as New York would go throw nine innings without scoring or allowing a run.
In extras, the Mets would go down 1-0 in the 10th before tying the game 1-1. New York rather embarrassed themselves by loading the bases with nobody out and still not winning the game. The Mets would go down again 2-1 again before Jorge Polanco walked to begin the bottom of the 11th. “La Pantera” would take a ball before hitting a walk off home run to left field. The Mets were 0-70 when being down after eight innings last season. Now, thanks to Robert Jr., the Mets are 1-0.
Luis Robert Jr. Can Be the X-Factor for New York in 2026
Robert Jr. in his career has been a player who has struggled immensely to stay healthy. He began his career with some power in 2020 with an .233 average and 11 homers in 56 games. He then exploded for an amazing season, batting .338 with 13 shots in 69 games. Robert Jr. was still pretty good in 98 games in 2022, with 12 home runs and a .284 average. It was 2023 that showed who he could be, as Robert Jr. hit 38 home runs with a .264 average in 145 games. In 2024 and 2025, Robert Jr. had very similar seasons, as he hit .223 and .222, with both seasons Robert Jr. hitting 14 homers in about 110 games.
Robert Jr. is capable of hitting 30+ homers for the Mets. If he does that, then he could single-handedly drag the Mets to the top of the world. Especially since New York should have staples all over their lineup. Overall, the Mets definitely needed a new center fielder. If healthy, Robert Jr. can be the best player they’ve seen in center field in a long time. Robert Jr. will be awesome to see in 2026.
