Rivalry games play a huge role in the tradition in college football. Many of these rivals hate each other and bring great matchups each time they are played. Here are three of the best power four conference rivalry games this weekend.
3 College Football Rivalry Games This Saturday
Illibuck (Ohio State vs Illinois)
The Ohio State Buckeyes and Illinois Fighting Illini clash on Big Noon for a wood turtle shaped trophy. This trophy game dates back to 1925, where the turtle shaped trophy was decided as the trophy of this matchup to represent the hopeful long life of this rivalry. The overall rivalry between the two programs dates back to 1902, where Ohio State and Illinois tied 0-0.
The two teams’ meeting on Saturday will be the first since 2017 and Ohio State has a seven-game win streak in the rivalry. The two face off at 12 PM EST on Saturday, Oct. 11, at Memorial Stadium in Champaign, Illinois
Heartland Trophy (Iowa vs Wisconsin)
The Heartland Trophy is a Brass Bull that is presented to the winner of the annual game between the Iowa Hawkeyes and Wisconsin Badgers. The trophy is relatively new, being introduce in 2003, but the rivalry itself dates back over 100 years in 1894. Wisconsin holds the all-time series lead 49-47-2 but the Hawkeyes have three game winning streak over the Badgers going back to 2022. Since the trophy was introduce, the overall series record is tied at 10 a piece.
The Hawkeyes and Badgers clash at 6 PM on Saturday, Oct. 11, at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, Wisconsin.
Red River Rivalry (Oklahoma vs Texas)
One of the most iconic rivalries is this weekend. The annual clash in the Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas, Texas between the Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas Longhorns. The rivalry dates back to 1900 and has been played annually since 1929. This matchup has been including during the times of the Southwest, Big Six, Eight, 12 and now the Southeastern Conference.
The all-time series lead is held by the Texas Longhorns 64-51-5. This matchup always bring some of the craziest plays, highest scores and even sometimes blow outs that catch you by surprise. The game has gone back and forth between the two schools the past few seasons, but everytime Texas has won the past four seasons, it has been a blowout. Oklahoma won two seasons ago, upsetting the Longhorns 34-30.
This year, the unexpected team is ranked in the top 10 with the Sooners being ranked No. 6 in the country, while despite being the No. 1 preseason ranked team, Texas is unranked going into the rivalry game.
The Sooners and Longhorns face off at 2:30 PM on Saturday, Oct. 11, at the Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas, Texas.
