Jared Goff has won zero games as a quarterback without Sean McVay or Ben Johnson calling plays which could lead to a rocky 2025 for the Lions.
Jared Goff Shocking Stat Causes Concern
The Detroit Lions had a rough go of it last Sunday after taking a loss to the Green Bay Packers. It was the first time the Lions officially played a game since their offensive and defensive coordinators were hired away this offseason as head coaches. One of the biggest questions this offseason was what would the Lions look like without their top coordinators. It’s not surprising the Lions lost because the Packers are a good team; it was how they lost.
Quarterback Jared Goff looked out of sorts throughout the day and was consistently under duress by the Packers’ defense. Goff has had five different coaches call plays for him since he entered the NFL in 2016 as the top pick, with McVay and Johnson being the most prominent. In games Goff has played in outside of McVay and Johnson calling plays, he has a career record of 0-19-1

It’s a shocking revelation for a Lions team that has championship aspirations this season. Under McVay and Johnson, Goff has been among the league leaders in yards and touchdowns, and he has made multiple Pro Bowls. However, questions have surrounded Goff this season about what things could look like with a new offensive play caller not on the caliber of Johnson and McVay. John Morton is the current offensive coordinator in Detroit, and head coach Dan Campbell knows there’s a lot of work to be done if Goff and the Lions want to go where they want to go.
“I thought he did good,” Campbell said of Morton’s play calling. “But we got to be able to master bread and butter before you get to all the other stuff. The other stuff won’t matter if we can’t find a way to run the football for more than 2.1 yards per carry. That’s where everything starts for us.”
Will Goff be able to keep the Lions afloat this season or will they take a step back?
After the loss to GB, Goff reiterated that the Lions need to have a sense of urgency to improve and seemed a bit more concerned about the offensive performance the Lions put out on the field.
“I’m not worried about the red zone,” Goff said after the GB loss. “I am moreso just urgent about getting details fixed and making sure everyone is on the same page and that our communication is better and that we are getting line up correctly and all that stuff. Ultimately, a lot of that falls on me. So, there are some things that I can do better.”
Goff has gotten a reputation as a quarterback, that if everything is perfect around him, he can be one of the best in the NFL. When things are not perfect, Goff can struggle. As the Lions continue to figure out who they are this season on offense, things will likely be worse for the time being, so Goff will need to show who he is at quarterback without McVay or Goff calling plays for him.
