As the New York Mets finally won a couple of games in a row, they seemed to get the news they didn’t want to hear anyway. Starting pitcher Griffin Canning, who has been a nice surprise for the Mets this season, may have suffered a season-ending injury.
Mets Starting Pitcher Suffers a Potential Season-ending Injury
Mets Believe Injury May Be an Achilles Tendon Injury
Unfortunately, the Mets believe that Canning’s injury could be related to the Achilles. This injury is reminiscent of the same injury that ruined Jayson Tatum and Tyrese Haliburton. If this injury was in fact an Achilles tear, then Canning is going to be out easily for the rest of the season. Fortunately, Canning seemed to be in less pain than both Haliburton and Tatum, yet Canning still couldn’t even walk on his left ankle.
Supposedly, the Mets at first believed that this could be an ankle issue. However, it turns out this could very well be much worse. Canning is still going to be screened for his injuries. However, for now, the Mets seem to have lost another starting pitcher, which arguably started their losing skid.
Canning Becomes Third Pitcher to Hit IL
Unfortunately for New York, the Mets will now be without their third good starting pitcher. Kodai Senga, who led the league in ERA until his injury, was the first. This injury wasn’t season-ending, yet it still caused significant pain for New York. Then, Tylor Megill, who looked like a big strikeout pitcher with 89 Ks in just 68 innings of work, also hit the IL with a sprain.
Both pitchers are set to return within the coming weeks, but both injuries hurt New York significantly. There remains good news for New York, however. Dedniel Nunez, who had a monster relief season in 2024, murdered the Atlanta Braves and looked good while doing it. The Mets also got some beautiful work from Austin Warren, who cut down the Braves after Canning got injured. Somehow, after Canning went down, the Mets walked no-hitters, allowed two hits, and shut out Atlanta. Better yet, New York loved the way Frankie Montas looked in his debut as he attacked and allowed no runs over five innings. Even though the Mets lost Canning, they will receive more help.
Sean Manaea, the Mets ace from last year will return within the next week. This will definitely benefit New York, especially considering the fact that New York could soon have Senga, Montas, Megill, Manaea, and Holmes, all nasty strikeout pitchers in the same rotation.
Could a Big Trade Come for New York?
Likely not, even though they have lost a few starters. At the end of the day, by the All-Star break the only pitcher on the IL could be Canning. Canning success felt like it was dying a little bit, and as was said before, the Mets could have a mean rotation. Unless another injury is suffered, they probably aren’t trading for a real starter.
The one position that New York probably would love to fill in is Center Field. The production from the Met’s center fielders this year has been atrocious. The first four hitters in the lineup are torture to face for pitchers, as no other team has four hitters with 15 homers. In fact, 13 teams don’t even have one-hitter with 15 blasts. If the Mets add a name like Luis Robert Jr. or even Cedric Mullins, the lineup would be instantly improved, especially the power.
The Mets may have another pitcher heading to the IL. These moments never feel good and definitely don’t help. However, help is on the way, and for now, the bullpen looks not too bad. Sure, the team wants to have healthy starters, but a trade isn’t needed for that position.
