The Giants have announced themselves to the baseball world with a dominant road trip, winning a series over the Yankees and splitting with the Phillies. Jung Hoo Lee announced himself to the world stage with his unbelievable performance in the Bronx. Veterans and key young guns contributed heavily throughout this tough road trip for the Giants. The Giants are now 13-6, good for third in the National League. This team is a clear threat that many didn’t expect before this season, and it starts with their budding superstar.Â
Jung Hoo Lee and the Giants Put On A Show With A Dominant Road Trip
Jung Hoo Lee is a Star
Lee has been unbelievable this season, with an OPS+ of 205! This is among the best in the MLB. In the home of Broadway, Lee put on a show. He hit three home runs in the series, and in the final game, he hit two homers in the same game. Lee has been incredible at putting himself in scoring positions; in fact, he leads the National League in extra-base hits with 14.
Lee is being recognized as a star with his elite performance this season. Lee already has over one win above replacement, and we’re only 18 games into a long 162-game season. Not only has Lee been one of the best hitters in the major leagues, but his defense has been stellar.Â
Lee consistently makes tough catches in the outfield to save the Giants in potentially dangerous situations. Lee floats around the outfield, making difficult plays look easy. The Grandson of the Wind boasts one out above average in the early stages of this season, meaning his overall defensive play has contributed positively to the Giants’ chances of winning baseball games. Not only does he get great jumps on balls in the outfield, but his arm strength is unreal. Lee was in the top 10 in arm strength in 2024, averaging 94.2 mph on throws out of the outfield. Lee is a budding superstar who will continue to grow with more time in the major leagues.Â
The Unsung HeroesÂ
The Giants’ veteran players have delivered unbelievable performances. Wilmer Flores, who struggled in 2024, has been resurrected this year and leads the MLB in RBIs with 23. Flores consistently hits well with runners in scoring position with an OPS of 1.150. Flores at 33, is playing the best he’s ever played to start the year. Providing the Giants with the offensive output they needed with guys like Willy Adames and Matt Chapman struggling to open the year. Flores leads the Giants in home runs with six on the season. His powerful bat has carried this Giants team to their extremely successful season.Â
Fan favorite Mike Yastrzemski has been unbelievable over this road trip, especially against the Phillies. Yaz in the first game of the series sealed the deal for the Giants with a two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to double their lead to four. Yaz had five RBIs in the series against the Phillies, helping carry the load for the squad. Yaz wasn’t the only Giant dominating the Phillies, with Tyler Fitzgerald finding his form.Â
Fitzgerald has upped his performance across the board with this series against the Phillies. In the first game of the series, the Giants were down 2-3, and Fitzgerald launched a three-run home run deep into the stands to cement the Giants’ lead. Before the series against the Phillies, Fitzgerald had a batting average of .237 and an OPS of .582; now, Fitzgerald is hitting over .314 with an .842 OPS. As the ninth hitter in the order, Fitzgerald is making himself a serious threat to opposing teams. If he can keep up this performance, the Giants have found their long-term second baseman.Â
Can They Continue Their Hot Streak?
The Giants currently rank third in the MLB in batting average with runners in scoring position, a stark difference from last year, when they ranked 24th. However, it’s unlikely that the Giants can continue hitting at such a high level with runners on the basepaths. They’ll eventually regress towards the middle of the pack, with a lot of their veteran players overperforming. But guys like Chapman and Adames have struggled this year and will pick up their play. The Giants’ pitching staff is elite and will keep this team in a lot of close games.
Overall, this Giants team is fun and improving at a rapid pace, becoming one of the best teams in baseball at the early stages of this season.Â
