Top 5 Iconic Sports Moments of the Last Decade

The last decade included some amazing plays and championships that will forever be etched into sports history. These are my top five picks for the most iconic sports moments of the last 10 years.

Top 5 Iconic Sports Moments of the Last Decade

Number 5: Odell’s One-Handed Grab

A catch that was played around the world, millions and millions of times. People would, and still will try to recreate this catch for years and years to come. It is 2014, and the New York Giants are playing the Dallas Cowboys in a regular-season NFL game. The score is 7-3 in the second quarter, and the Giants are up. Eli Manning throws a near 50-yard pass downfield to Odell Beckham Jr. I’m not going to say that it was the greatest catch a human has ever made, except it was. Odell Beckham Jr made a play that will go down as the greatest catch in NFL History.

Number 4: The Block and Cleveland’s Title

There is bad, and then there is the Cleveland Cavaliers. A team that, before Lebron James, had a semi-decent history in the NBA, but were never able to win a championship. We all know about Lebron James coming and going from Cleveland, but like it or not, he promised Cleveland a championship, and that is exactly what he did. With the score tied in Game 7 of the 2016 NBA Finals, there were just under 2 minutes to go. The Warriors have an easy fastbreak to take the lead, when out of nowhere, Lebron James blocks Andre Igoudala off the backboard, leading to an eventual Kyrie Irving three-pointer, another iconic sports moments, and the first championship in Cleveland Cavaliers history.

Number 3: Auburn goes the Distance

Alabama is the best program in college football history, there is no doubt about that. This leads to many other programs hating them with a passion. However, no one hates the Crimson Tide more than the Auburn Tigers. The Iron Bowl is a game between the two teams that take place every year. The score was 28-28 with one second left on the clock. Alabama was lining up to kick a 57-yard field goal when it was short by a few yards. Luckily for Auburn, Chris Davis was waiting in the End zone and took the ball back 109 yards to win the Iron Bowl for Auburn over the powerhouse Alabama.

Number 2: AGUEROOOOO

Let’s go back to England, 2012. Manchester City is playing QPR, and Manchester United are playing Sunderland. The top of the table is extremely close as the two teams are fighting for first. All Manchester City needs to do is win, or match the result of Manchester United. They are playing a bottom table QPR team and expect to win. However, things went downhill during the game, as they were down 2-1 to QPR, and Manchester United just won their game against Sunderland. This means that if Manchester City does not win, they will fall short to their neighbor Manchester United yet again. Going into the additional five minutes of stoppage time, Manchester City fans were in tears. In the 92’ minute, Edin Dzeko headed one in to make it 2-2. There was a small glimmer of hope for Manchester City, but everyone knew it might be a bit too late. Two minutes later, in the 94’ minute, Mario Balotelli played a ball off to Sergio Aguero, and he nailed the ball into the back of the net to seal Manchester City’s Premier League Title.

Number 1: The Cubs drought ends

As a Cubs fan, this final spot had to be the 2016 World Series. The Chicago Cubs hadn’t won a World Series since 1908, and they were staring at a Game 7 after being down in the series, 3-1. The Cubs were looking good to start, they led the entire game, and were even up 5-1 at one point. However, in the bottom of the eighth, Rajai Davis, crushed the entire city of Chicago with a two-out, two-run homer to tie the game at 6 apiece. We went to extra innings, and after a rain delay, the Cubs came out and scored two runs in the 10th to make it 8-6. The Indians made it interesting as they tagged on one more to make it 8-7, but a ground ball to Kris Bryant would seal the deal, and give the Cubs their first World Series title in over 100 years.

What Do The 2020s Hold?

There were hundreds and hundreds of iconic sports moments, but these were the top five in my opinion. Cheers to hopefully another great decade of plays, titles, and superstar players for the fans.
