With the NFL season a little over a week away, it is the time of year where teams make their final cuts and assemble their 53-man roster. The preseason just wrapped up, so some teams got a look at who would be their starting quarterback in Week 1.
This is true for the New England Patriots, who released Cam Newton after just one season as a Patriot. Cam Newton wasn’t given much to work with. An injury-riddled offensive line and lack of wide receiver talent showed as Cam struggled most of the year.
The Patriots releasing Cam Newton means that rookie quarterback, Mac Jones, will be the starter in Week 1. Jones looked great in the preseason, as he was hitting wide-open receivers like a veteran and had the highest completion percentage in the preseason.
Bringing shock to many Patriots fans, most thought that Cam Newton would be the starter in Week 1 and Jones would start halfway through the season. Cam Newton is a free agent now. Let’s break down three teams he could land.
3 Teams Where Cam Newton Could Go
Denver Broncos
The Broncos should be the favorites to grab Cam Newton. They named veteran quarterback Teddy Bridgewater their starter for Week 1. Drew Lock just doesn’t seem like the guy in Denver, despite how many people thought he would.
Cam Newton would make a great addition to the roster. Bridgewater is known for making the most of an opportunity, as he filled in for Drew Brees a few years ago and went undefeated in his starts with the Saints.
Bridgewater is also 28 and has had a history of injuries in the past. So, why not a fresh start for Cam Newton in Denver?
As mentioned earlier, the Patriots had struggled at the wide receiver position last year. With targets like Jerry Jeudy and Courtland Sutton, it would give Cam Newton a great opportunity to shine with the talent around him.
It would be cool to see Newton in Denver, as they missed out on the chance to pick him in 2011 when he was drafted 1st overall to the Panthers and the Broncos had the second pick. Denver drafted Von Miller that year, so it all works out.
If Newton were to go to Denver, that would mean the 1st and 2nd overall picks from the 2011 draft would be on the same roster. Pretty cool if you ask me.
Washington Football Team
Washington is a quarterback away from being a contender. With a star-studded defense lead by Chase Young and a loaded offense with weapons like Terry McLaurin and Curtis Samuel, Washington is just missing that one piece.
Ryan Fitzpatrick will be the starter in Week 1. We all know the cycle. Fitzpatrick lights it up the first few weeks and tricks the team into thinking he is the guy. Thenn he gets a nice payday and absolutely stinks. It happens every year.
If Fitz were to stink, he would get a bench. It has happened before and it will happen again. This is where Cam Newton comes in. A hungry veteran looking for one last chance in the NFL.
Like Denver, Newton would have many good weapons around him along with a strong offensive line. Denver would be the perfect place for Newton to thrive.
Houston Texans
Look. Out of all the teams we talked about so far, this is the least likely, but don’t rule it out.
The Houston Texans have built a veteran roster this year with the likes of Mark Ingram, Bradley Roby, and Whitney Mercilus. The likelihood of Deshaun Watson playing this year is low, so why not give Cam Newton a shot?
Houston is projected to be the worst team in the league this year. Newton has really nothing to lose if he were to go here. The wide receivers are arguably better than New England’s last year.
Cam Newton’s status is unknown at the moment. You should expect him to be under center for a new team this year.
