2025 NFL MVP Race: Allen, Herbert Leading The Way Through First Month

With the first quarter of the 2025 season in the books, here is a look at how the NFL MVP race is shaping up.

2025 NFL MVP Race Through the First Month of The Season

6. QB Daniel Jones, Indianapolis Colts

Jones has been the most surprising story of the 2025 season so far. After winning the quarterback battle against Anthony Richardson in training camp Jones has been one of the best quarterbacks in the league through the first month of this season.

Jones had a down game against the LA Rams, but Colts are 3-1 on the season. He is ninth in the league in quarterback rating, fourth in completion percentage, and the Colts offense ranks first in offensive success rate.

5. QB Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs are 2-2 after starting the season 0-2, and a big reason for that is Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes leads his team in touchdowns, passing yards, and rushing yards. He has literally been doing everything he possibly can to keep the Chiefs afloat. Mahomes looked like the Mahomes of old Sunday in the Chiefs win over the Ravens as he tossed four touchdown passes.

KC will need to play catch-up with the LA Chargers for a division title, but as long as Mahomes is playing at this level and dragging the Chiefs to wins, he will continuously be in the MVP conversation.

4. QB Matthew Stafford, Los Angeles Rams

There is a strong argument that the Rams should be 4-0 right now. LA was up 26-7 to the defending champion Eagles before a heroic comeback happened that gave the Rams their only loss in week three. Stafford is among the league leaders in passing yards and has three consecutive multi-touchdown passing games.

Stafford had the game-winning 88-yard touchdown pass against the Indianapolis Colts to push the Rams to 3-1. They look like one of the best teams in the entire NFL and a legit contender in the NFC.

3. QB Jalen Hurts, Philadelphia Eagles

It doesn’t look pretty all the time, but the results are what they are with Jalen Hurts. The Eagles are currently 4-0 on the season and have defeated four playoff teams from last season. Philly came out on top in the Super Bowl rematch with the Chiefs, they defeated the LA Rams in a rematch from the NFC Divisional round, and took down the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a playoff team from last season.

In the Rams game, the Eagles came back down from 26-7 behind Hurts’ arm as he threw three touchdowns to bring Philly back for the win. Against the Buccaneers, Hurts was solid in the first half, having tossed two passing touchdowns, going 15/16. The critics have a lot to say about Hurts, but he consistently finds a way to come through for Philly.

Hurts is now 18-0 in his last 18 games, including the playoffs.

2. QB Justin Herbert, Los Angeles Chargers

The LA Chargers are 3-1 on the season through the first quarter of the season, and it’s entirely behind the arm and legs of Justin Herbert. The Chargers have wins over the Chiefs, the Broncos, and the Raiders. Herbert is among the league leaders in passing yards and touchdowns and has picked up where he left off after a strong season with Jim Harbaugh last year.

1. QB Josh Allen, Buffalo Bills

After winning the award last season, Allen has picked up where he left off. Buffalo sits atop the AFC right now. Allen has thrown for 964 yards to go with eight touchdowns and one interception. He has also added 160 rushing yards on the ground and three touchdowns. Allen most likely has the inside track to the MVP award right now. Suppose Buffalo is able to hold onto the number one seed in the AFC. In that case, it’s without question Allen will be the MVP award winner because he will have the individual profile to go along with the record Buffalo will likely have.
