Starting July 1, when the last year starts, players have the opportunity to re-sign with their current team for a period of up to eight years.
McJesus has worked hard for the Oilers and has already helped them tremendously this season. He scored 26 points in the postseason in 16 games, and he had nine points in the series against the Stars. 2. He Was Only 19 When He Was Picked by the Edmonton Oilers

He has been playing hockey since around the age of three, practicing in the family basement on rollerblades. He was also a part of a hockey program in Aurora, Ontario. The young player managed to win several championships.
At 15 years old, he was able to enter the junior ice hockey circuit. He was chosen by the Erie Otters before eventually joining the Edmonton Oilers.
3. He Was the Youngest Captain in the History of the NHL
As soon as he became a part of the Edmonton Oilers team, people noticed how talented he was and agreed that he had great potential to become a key player. After showcasing his skills, McJesus, who was only 19 years old, became the team captain.
He had been with the Oilers for only one season before they realized how much of a treasure he was. Therefore, he became the youngest captain in NHL history.
4. An Injury Threatened His Career
During the last game of the Oilers in the 2018-19 season, McDavid was tripped by Mark Giordano, the then-Calgary Flames defenceman. Thus, he went into the goal post, which resulted in a torn PCL in his knee. This injury was very serious, so McDavid had to decide whether to undergo surgery or miss the entire 2019-20 season to recover.
He could also rehab the injury, something that had never been done by other athletes, but that came with the risk of losing some speed. He ended up missing a season, but he recovered very quickly and went back to playing afterward.
5. He Won the Fastest Skater
McDavid was often applauded for his incredible speed on the ice. Therefore, he won the Fastest Skater at the NHL All-Star Skills Competition not once, but four times.
6. One of the Only Players to Win the Hart Memorial Trophy
Connor McDavid reached another milestone. He is one of the only two players to win the Hart Memorial Trophy as the most valuable player of the league, something only Wayne Gretzky, his fellow Oilers captain, did in 1982.
7. He Beat Several Records

10. He Was Suspended for Three Games in 2025
After cross-checking Conor Garland in a game against the Vancouver Canucks at the start of 2025, McJesus was given a three-game suspension on January 20, 2025.
Based on his average annual salary and the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, the hockey player had to forfeit $195,312.51. The funds will go to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.
