As the 2016/17 season draws to a close, teams from around the NFL were looking to bolster their rosters as well as coaching staffs.

The Top 5 NFL Coaching Hires

5. Doug Marrone: The Jacksonville Jaguars head coaching hire is suspect at best. Granted, Marrone isn’t a terrible coach and comes with experience, but the offensive line which he has coached the past two seasons has not been very good. That said, Marrone found success as the head coach at Syracuse and some with the Buffalo Bills. The Tom Coughlin hiring does make this hire look a little bit better.

4. Vance Joseph: This was a pretty decent hire. Joseph is a defensive coach, which is the strongest piece for the Denver Broncos. Joseph was recently the defensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins this past season. While the Dolphins defense was far from spectacular, you can see why John Elway wanted him. The Broncos coming off a Super Bowl would have made them an attractive landing spot.

3. Sean McVay: This is an ideal hire for the Los Angeles Rams. McVay is a very smart offensively-minded coach which happens to be what the Rams lacked this past season. McVay made Kirk Cousins look good and look for him to do the same with Jared Goff. Goff is the future of this franchise, and investing in a young, smart, offense-first coach will help Goff in the long run. Also hiring Wade Phillips will help out this team.

2. Sean McDermott: This was a great hire by the Buffalo Bills. McDermott was a great defensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers, helping to lead them to Super Bowl 50. He brings a defense-first mentality, though Bills fans have heard that before. He will help make the Buffalo Bills defense into the elite unit it is capable of.

1. Kyle Shanahan: This is a great hire by the San Francisco 49ers. Shanahan has been a great offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons and he is one of the reasons they are having such a great season. He has helped Matt Ryan become one of the game’s premier passers. He will probably get to develop a young quarterback that we can assume the 49ers will draft. This is the best hire the 49ers could’ve made and it was the best hire so far ahead of next season.
